i blame the gentrification of underground youth cultures through the internet. any time some really cool movement coming from a minority or out of a culture intending to bring people faced with hard gang or low socio economic status together it is appropriated by white kids on the internet who fetishize that stuff. look at hip hop, jungle, house, footwork/juke, etc... cultures cultivated out of poor minorities or social outcasts trying to raise themselves up but it ends up being appropriated by rich white kids who hear about it on the internet.
the most obvious example i can the ink of in the past 5 years has been how footwork has transformed from this really beautfiul music coming from inner city blacks, bringing together people who might have been from different neighborhoods or gangs together in the appreciation of dance and music. but internet media caught a hold of it and diluted the culture. now you have the blandest of bland hipster footwork comign out-- "le look at me using quirky giant claw-esque samples making le dumb nigger music haha. im so ironic." same with all hip hop but most recently trap. i saw trap as a sort of rejection of white appropriation-- whites took all black hip hop styles before so they tried to make something that would be unwhitewashable but unfortunately even that was taken.
