I'm thinking of getting my son a guitar for Christmas and would like some opinions. He is a big metal fan and likes Megadeth a lot, and I was looking at some Dean guitars, would their In Deth We Trust Zero be a good starter guitar? It's going for about little under $400 atm.

Get him a Jackson Kelly instead, just in case he's more of a Marty Friedman type of kid.

while i must admit that i don't know the guitar, I really think you should buy a more traditional guitar (think strat/les paul-style).

from my experience beginners tend to struggle with guitars shaped more extravagant forms (explorer or flying v).

Go check out the lower-end models of ibanez, jackson or ESP LTD.

I asked my dad for a jackson when I was in middle school. I outgrew my metal head phase and wish I had asked for a less "edgy" guitar. I still use it cause it has a nice tone but damn if I don't look stupid with it

Presuming he doesn't already play guitar he wouldn't have an amp. For 400 you should buy a cheap guitar and amp combo pack from a shop and go get it set up from a guitar shop. He will be able to learn and play metal with an amp. This is what i done and no regrets. No point spending $400 on guitar and he can't play the songs he like without an amp. It's a great way to start

ah okay man :) all i know about Dean is the some models come with a floyd rose bridge and they are difficult to maintain. Hope you have luck getting your son a guitar. you're a good dad. Me and many other people with our parents got us guitars or some from of equipment

an ideal LP would be the original made by gibson, but since you already stated that you're not willing to spend that much money (which is perfectly fine), you should have a look at the Epiphone Tribute Plus.

good build quality and original gibson USA'57 classic pups. it's better than a Gibson LP studio.

Those metal sounds are due to effects. I'd recommend this, a lot of videos on youtube on how to build, and even paint. Be really cool, can make it into something of own, and play REALLY well.

if he's a heavy metal type guy you can't go wrong with getting him an ESP LTD model guitar with EMGs so he'll get the kind of tone he likes
as for amps i'd recommend having a look at Marshall for obvious reasons but also Blackstar as they have some really good metal practice amps

just to add, it doesn't have to be esp ltd, literally any make with EMG pickups will get him close enough to the tone he likes that he'll really enjoy playing, you can find some for affordable EMG equipped guitars from almost any major brand of guitars
