101st is also significantly weaker than the rest of the songs so that drops it a few points. Its a solid 6/10 album.

Hating her unusual voice is the gauntlet you have to go through in order to appreciate some of the best musicianship of the 21st cenutry. But her voice isn't actually bad from a techical perspective, it's just different enough from the norm that it's offputting initially.

Her voice on that album is like the bitter taste of a really good IPA. It's sort-of gross, but it's also really fucking good at the same time. The songwriting on that album is good enough that the odd qualities in her voice only add to it.

First of all, for you idiots above, Three Little Babes.

Now, flaws in Divers:
1. The loud parts of Leaving the City are overcrowded and boring. They screwed up the production and lost the voice-driven energy of the live boots.
2. Lyrically, there's a lot of slow exposition. Can anyone tell me what the verse starting "I kid with Rufuous Nightjar" is supposed to mean?
3. Also lyrically, this album is rife with grand abstract declarations. It's not as interesting as the imagery on her earlier albums.
4. She did not make Same Old Man her own, the way she has with Ca the Yowes. Her rendition hews to closely to Karen Dalton's. It makes the track sound out of place on the album, despite its thematic fit.
5. The ending of The Things I Say. Nobody needs that.

Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne is awesome. But I do like this song, the simplicity doesn't bother me, I don't think its awful because of it.

It's quite conventional, really -- a lot of harp and string flourishes, string trills and rolls. Nothing wrong with it, but it's still kinda plain.

She's also far too verbose for my liking. My subjective feelings towards it, I know, but I think it just clutters it up -- kind of a cliche of singer-songwriters.

Ostensibly means something is the opposite of what it states. If I say something is "ostensibly not racist" it means it's racist despite saying it's not.

Mooted, in proper countries, means that something's debatable.

One of the definitions of "moot" is to reduce something to the point of insignificance. And again, whether this is the first OED definition doesn't matter. English doesn't have a language academy; usage is the determining factor.

The most obnoxious thing about grammarians is that they don't realize that many of the rigid rules they subscribe to are entirely arbitrary. Or they themselves use words in ways that were once considered incorrect. I mean, does anyone literally use "decimate" to mean "kill 1 in 10" anymore?

Don't be so obtuse and stop trotting out this banal "language evolves" crap. That's usually a good thing, yes, but not always the case and it doesn't apply here -- the language is actually devolving. If you're a linguistic determinist, you would realise the importance of certain words.

I absolutely love her, but I think the last track didn't hold up to its themes. I think the fact she managed to deal with themes just as grand before was due to the way she maintained an emotional or personal approach relation with whichever idea of humanity she wanted to explore. Also the audacity and pomp of the purely musical elements always seemed integral to the effect of feeling "dumbstruck with the sweetness of being" she often conveys, and it just felt a tiny bit to bland for it all to piece together effectively

Proves that you don't understand language. Necessity is the mother of linguistic invention. If the meaning exists and someone finds it necessary to express, then the word either exists, or isn't necessary to express its meaning. But even if it is the case that "ostensibly" has no replacement, why are you assuming that words can't have multiple meanings? How many English words have multiple meanings that contradict themselves?

I only listened to the first three tracks
The production gave the music some discomforting modern sheen to every sound that I turned it off and listened to have one on me which is a good record. Divers is lackluster and the compositions pale in comparison to her earlier works. Also lyrically I am not impressed. Hype her up if you want though because she's prob the best you'll get when it comes to the post-capitalist rock music sphere. And before you respond, tip tip boys.

The same way a mother looking at her child makes her forget the pain of birth is the way that someone who conquers death forgets death once they see what comes after. Newsom is a Christian, it's worth pointing out.

Well, she is certainly not a passionate atheist, but she might as well be a christian theology enthusiast - it would fit in well with her proclaimed interests. The use of the term "erase" is also reminiscent of the Socratic arguments on the immortality of the soul, which wouldn't compose the only reference to classic philosophy in the album.
Either way, I don't think she is necessarily speaking of afterlife here. Her goal might be to point out our tendency to evaluate a man's life based heavily on his death.

Speaking of the Divers song, I was listening to Goose Eggs earlier and can hear some kind of parallel between the ending of that track and the descending / ascending harp bits on Divers.

Obviously it has all these lovely country-fied colourings but some of the melodic base ingredients seem to be the same. I'm wondering if anyone else can make this out or if my ears are just being a bit useless today.
