There are very few albums I can't listen to because of the production but this is one of them, even listening to live recordings of the same songs from the album or any of their other works, it feels so saccharine by comparison.
Anyone would settle for a product that strips out parts and diminishes aspects of what makes the band so enjoyable, the sloppy playing, the hoarse screaming, the grainy feedback, obviously has a surface level relationship with the band and music as a whole. I mean, I suppose comparatively, it is aggressive compared to most mainstream music but to anyone else, it really just feels like half the product. The worst part is that, if it's the 'best' pop/rock album of that period, then it says very little about commercial music as a whole.
