So the Foobar SA-CD DSF/DFF decoder was updated and now outputs sound in actual DSD, using the asio DSD codec you can listen to it, not sure if that's new or not but holy shit.

DSD64 at like 5mpbs is crazy good, some say 350kbps is good enough but this DSD business is really something else.

is DSD /placebo/ or the highest quality music you can get?

Personally I think it's amazing.

To save money, you don't need to turn the 1bit data on an optical disc back into a 16/24bit PCM stream.

It was an interesting idea, but again it's a solution in search of a problem.

Yeah, I'd say there is, you can get digital copies of DSD albums for like $20 online, or you can pirate them, but the file sizes are a bit ridiculous. pic related.

Compared to CD? Yes
Compared to DVDA? No, it's worse.

DSD64 (what you'll find on SACD or rips of SACD) equates to roughly 20/88.1 - DVDA can do upto 24/196.

DSD is nice, but it's expensive and cumbersome (if you want DSD from source through to the receiver/amp) especially on PC, where DVDA can be played by most anything.
Any old DVD player can be used for DVDA (although it might not support MLP compression, so you'd likely be stuck with 24/48 uncompressed PCM from an old DVD player)

FFMPEG has been able to for ~8 years now.

I'd assume that there is a plugin/codec for foobar, but I don't use it so i've no idea.
