britpop happened when nobody in britain gave a shit about rock anyway, it was the early-mid 90s when anyone who wasnt a shut in weirdo or a wrong generationer was out raving. blur and oasis's audience in the 90s were 30-somethings wondering where their guitar music had gone. the traditional music press like nme and melody maker lapped it up and pushed it as hard as they could because theyd been passed by and rendered irrelevant by dance music. the whole blur-oasis "rivalry" was their invention, an attempt to stoke interest in the scene
