I'll quote Marcel
>I'm sorry, but I NEVER got why Joanna Newsom was so popular/acclaimed. I could never get past her horrible voice on any of her records and the production + instrumentation on Divers is just horrendous. Fuck, I hate this album so much. The production feels super airtight, giving the instruments (and even the vocals) little-to-no room to breathe and explore the scenery of the album. It sound very plastic and artificial. The instrumentation itself is incredibly cheesy and inconsistent with its chord progressions. I feel like I'm listening to one of those classical medieval music soundtrack vids on YouTube, and that doesn't help when the vocals don't compliment ANY of the instrumentation whatsoever. Every record I have heard of Newsom's is a pain to the ears, with try-hard production values that choke the core of contemporary freak-folk parties. Devendra Banhart does it much better. She tries too hard to be quirky, and many of her lengthier songs do not justify their running time whatsoever. Also: her voice. her fucking voice. It makes me so fucking angry that people disagree that Billy Joel has more artistic depth than Joanna Newsom. I'd much rather listen to him than her. 3/10
