Anti-depressants and music

I'm going to therapy for my bipolar and depressive tendencies, and I'm afraid of getting prescribed anti-depressants because of what I am scared of them doing to my love of music.

Music has helped me greatly through my depression, and I particularly like depressing albums and songs becuase it seems to help me get my feelings out.

I'm afraid that if I take my pills, I'll lose that appreciation for music and I won't like it anymore.

Can anyone who is on anti-depressants tell me the effect of them on music?

I know some people have problems with anti-depressants, the only problem I've had is that it takes more effort to reach orgasm

Echoing what this guy said. Being in a better variety of moods (ie not just terrified and ashamed) has let me get a whole lot more out of a whole more kinds of music. Being able to concentrate on things that aren't hating myself or how much everyone else probably hates me or how time is literally slipping away every second or how any decision I make will cut me off from all the other decisions I could have made has let me appreciate albums as a whole and now I can listen to noise because there's really interesting stuff in there instead of just to overwhelm everything that made me feel awful.

I also even had the more effort to reach orgasm thing but that went away for me and to be honest the first orgasm I had after that took effect was fucking incredible and I'd give up another couple months of easy orgasms for an experience like in a heartbeat.

The big thing is that there are lots and lots of SSRIs and if one is not helping you talk to your doctor and try another one. Also I'd wager that if you got to experience both you'd take functioning and not caring about music over not functioning and only caring about music. That probably sounds super condescending but honestly it's true.

I have some homicidal thoughts from time to time and I'm afraid of even mentioning them to my therapist out of fear of them instantly chastising me and throwing me into a padded cell somewhere, but at the same time I'm afraid of my medication making those thoughts turn into a nonstop thing until I finally fly off and do something.

Not only that, but what if they just make me more depressed? What if they make my suicidal tendencies go to the wayside and make me finally go kill myself?

This shit is fucking scary.

You can stop taking them if they make you worse. They probably won't though, because it's a little more scientific that just giving you random new personality. The most important thing is keep a dialogue open with your doctor so if you don't like how one drug is affecting you they can set you on another until you find something that works.

The only downsides I had was that I was very drowsy during the day and numb the first few weeks but that leveled out. I also had insomnia and would wake up in the middle of the night. I also still experience very vivid and strange dreams, those have just gotten worse.

i've been taking 220mgs (or something like that) of effexor every morning for the past year and a half and let me tell you, they will ruin your goddamn life if you're a hopeless introspective like me. they'll turn you into a numb zombie incapable of utilizing things like your vocabulary and your ability to cry, and if you miss a dose even by just a few hours, your brain will sperg the FUCK out and you'll become extremely ill. i'd rather go through heroin withdrawals than go another day of nauseating, frustrating brain zaps and everything else that comes with SSRI/SNRI withdrawal. stay the fuck away.

It's more like a search guided by years and years of collective experience and statistics. I don't have real statistics on this but ~in my experience~ the first one people are prescribed works*. I only make such a big deal about potentially trying others because you sounded afraid that starting on one drug is final and you're stuck on it forever whatever the consequences. The reality is that it's much more flexible than that and that the goal is to help you get to a better place emotionally so if something is ineffective then you'll try something else.

*I'm basing this on the four or five people who I know irl who I've had good conversations about the topic with. Only one of them had a bad experience with one drug and had to change. That's a tiny sample size but it's the best I've got and it checks out with what my psychologist and doctor had to say.

The whole point is that they help you do the solving yourself because you they lessen the well of shit that you have to climb out of before you can actually think clearly enough or be proactive enough to address those real problems.

They're there to get you steady enough that therapy can actually work.

it depends on the pills, you should do some research on what you're taking. I'm on fluoxetine for depression and it doesn't really affect my mood. I always thought depression would help me be better artist, but I realized when it actually happened that sadness is just a feeling whereas depression is a sickness that drains your energy and causes chaos in your mind. Most pills for depression are for restoring your dopamine levels and don't really affect your emotions.

Anti-depressants are a counter-indication for the bipolar patients, because it would increase the duration and intensity of the maniac phases, if you are clinically bipolar, they will most likely prescribe you Lithium based-drugs or anti-epilleptic drugs (which the second indication is bipolar disease), coming from a french med scool student.

I find therapy is the most effective thing, but Lexapro and Prozac kept me from killing myself, so... Just listen to your body. And listen to good music to help, you won't stop liking music on meds-- I promise.

Medfag here, but no psychiatry expert.
I've been on mirtazapine for depression, I find that I'm able to actually enjoy music again. I don't mean a joyful euphoria, just being able to actively want to listen to stuff I like. When I'm depressed nothing interests me anymore. My tastes haven't changed as a result of medication, I doubt antidepressants will do that to anyone.
Depression isn't being sad. That's part of being normal. If you do have depression then the aim of treatment is regain a normal emotional response. And as anon said, bipolar disorder has very different treatment to depression.
>If you like wallowing in your own sorrows while listening to OK Computer rather than just enjoying the music and feels I'd say that's not healthy, not doing the music justice and probably a talking point at therapy.

Well actually bipolar is one of my issues.

I have aspergers and sensory integration disorder, and was loaded on pills as a kid, but my mother took me off them all.

Basically among bipolar I also have: social anxiety(can interact with humans fine, but just don't feel comfy in social settings), general anxiety(i have chewed the tips of my fingers to where they're just fucked up. I actually want to just wear gloves when I go out now.), and that's it really.

Would they load me up on a shit tillion ton of drugs for all this? I don't wanna be doped up like that on all that siht.

Medfag back again. I can only give anecdotes about depression from personal experience. Antidepressants shouldn't ruin your musical life.
About what they'll put you on, I can't say. The main thing is to make sure that you get a say in agreeing a management plan that you understand and will want to engage with.
Bipolar disorder is treated with mood stabilizers, like lithium. They shouldn't be "doping" you up. Sedatives are avoided if possible as far as I know.
I'm in the UK so I dunno what guidelines are local to you but there are two authorities respected on psychiatry; ICD 10 and DSM IV. Google them, read about your conditions and the evidence and discuss it with your doctor.

Not only that, but even years, and I mean years after going off of them you'll still experience aftershocks and lingering affects from having taken them.

Kratom works pretty well, but it's a bitch when you get bad batches that don't work. Withdrawal from that shit is uncomfortable, but the worst part is just feeling bored as hell for weeks afterwards. Be careful with that stuff, it affects opioid receptors. It's cliche, but exercise / manual labor helps a lot for depression.

SSRIs have had little effect on me. In fact the only thing it does is that it has been the one thing that has added the hesitation to commit suicide, keeping me alive.

Now if you're prescribed Seroquel (which you might be cuz bipolar or if you have massive sleep problems like me), this effect is not just with music but everything. If you experience certain stuff while on the med you might not remember them especially when going to sleep, but then you'll feel super familiar with the stuff you somehow forgot when you experience it off them.

Remember with meds is that the instant you feel something off tell your psych ASAP.
