Fuck the haters, fuck the public, and fuck being self conscious.
Tap into your innermost shitty feelings, your passions, whatever, then just let it loose.
If you think it sounds rough, it probably does. Accompany yourself to give you structure if you need it. Not everyone is going to sound like roses, but if you're giving it your all, at least people will be moved by your energy.
Just belt it.
And fuck that reverb soaked mumbling that people call singing these days.
