This makes perfect sense.

If you make your 23c tire close to 25c, your customers will feel and praise the better ride quality and rolling resistance, but they won't feel the (pretty negligible anyway) increased aerodynamic drag.

The only caveat is that you still need to keep the tire small enough to fit in frames that weren't built with 25c in mind.

I just installed a pair of new tires, and noticed that they have a bit of whitish residue on them. If I rub the surface hard with a finger, the residue comes off like eraser shavings.

Is this something that needs to be taken care of before the bike is ridden?

I had a pair of Bontrager Race Lites in 23c, they lasted me for three years without a puncture. I literally rode through the rubber to the synthetic fibre belt and I still didn't get punctures. At the time of buying them they didn't have fantastic reviews either, but I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Only cost like $20 or so, crazy.

I've put in a couple of months on these on mixed terrain. Really in love with them. With wide rims I run them at around 30-40psi and have found it pretty perfect for street and [light] trail riding.

They are made by Panaracer (who among other things, makes the Pasela). The Pasela is available in a folding bead, but what makes the C-Line different is the absence of any sort of puncture protection strip in the tread or casing, making them lighter and more subtle. Their tread pattern is also different from the 37c Pasela which is shown on the left of pic attached.

Apparently Hetres only cost ~$40 in Japan at full retail including tax. Which is not unreasonable over a Pasela considering the special size, the color options, the custom tread pattern and the folding bead. $60 is borderline ridiculous though.

And Extra Legers? Only ~$45. The 700 yen ($6) difference makes upgrading to extra legers a no brainer.

What does Jan do? He stops stocking the Hetre Extra Legers, makes some under his own brand to increase his margins, and on top of $60 already being overpriced for the base model, he charges an extra $20 for the extra supple casing.

Basically, this is the exact same as Jan being the exclusive US importer of the Hutchinson Confrerie. He becomes the sole distributor, marks this shit way up, and creates competing products so he can have high profit margins and not have to compete.

Ridiculous. If I find myself in Japan again, I'll be picking up some Extra Leger Hetres. I never liked Jan that much anyways. He can suck a dick.

According to http://www.bikequarterly.com/images/TireDrop.pdf that comes fairly close to the recommended pressure on 25 mm tyres for the "racing" weight distribution.

But it's probably easier to just follow their formula than make shit up.

Although I was running 100 psi on some 23s and they wore out super fast. Maybe just crap tyres though.

Both my luganos had sidewall defects out of the shop. There were two huge bumps on the rear tire which felt like i was riding on the sidewalk even on smooth roads. I aint buying schwalbe shit except for ice spikers because i dont have other options for studs
