>>893154Not the above anon, but I have a couple bikes setup with Shimergo myself.
1. Shiftmates are a 3rd-best option imho (after "hubbub" routing which is fiddly, ideally you should stick to a combination like C10-S8 that routes the cable through the derailer exactly as designed), I've seen pulleys fray and damage cables that weren't setup just right (this eventually leads to breakage), and there are plenty of Shimergo setups that don't require buying any extra pulley.
2. To your specific question, yes you can shift Shimano 8 speed with a post-2001 Campy 9-speed shifter, you just need to use "hubbub" cable routing. Again, getting 10-speed Campy shifters would be better if you're sticking with an otherwise Shimano 8-speed group.
But frankly, if you've read the CTC page linked above and still feel uncertain, I would discourage you from considering any Shimergo setup. Mixing shift systems is practically unheard of outside of the internet and most bike mechanics will just laugh at you (behind your back, if they're polite) if you ask for help doing something so patently ridiculous as combining Shimano with Campy shifters - so if you're not comfortable with DIY, don't.
