The west coast mainline is at capacity. Completely full. There is no way to get more trains onto it (despite the claims of anti-HS2 groups: they're talking bollocks). Yet demand is rising, both for freight and passengers.
Rising demand coupled with a line that is at capacity is obviously a problem. The only real solution is to build a new line, which will provide additional capacity. If you're going to build a new line, it may as well be a high speed line.
Hence HS2. Build it, move the passenger trains onto it and that opens capacity for more freight on the west coast mainline.
That's it. It's that simple.
