Trains have issues in the autumn during leaf fall, as they lose traction so can't move/brake due to low adhesion. Network Rail has leaf cleaning trains to prevent this, but it is not always effective. Many trains are cancelled due to leaves on the line. I'm riding between 40 and 50 miles on a sunday morning, tackling some decent hills (cat 4 according to strava) and riding at 15mph. pic related.

One or two occasionally do runs for other locomotives if there is a shortage, a couple went to museums and most are scrapped sadly.
They didn't take the highly increased train-weights they had to move, combined with lessened maintenace and partly even regional service all too well in the long run.

But the power; ya. Those middling racers are athletes on closed courses, with every variable tightly controlled, in a sprint. And they don't have an additional 500W from the bike itself. A motorized bicycle is working in the rough and tumble real world where shit happens and you need a lot more margin. We're not talking dernys here. As the power (W), mass (kg), and speed (km/s) come up, suspension, lights, brakes, overall strength, and all that good stuff become less optional. Not just for yourself, but for the road-going public as well.
I had a Kona Dew Al frame with Wilderness 500W front hub for many years. Served my very well in the winter but I thought any more would be too much. Eventually the frame started cracking, fortunately without hurting me. Sure, it could have been a better stronger frame, but then it could have been a better, stronger, more expensive everything. Once you start down that path you just end up at a motorcycle.

(supposedly) it was originally intended to be the base model of a metro system for the region. If you look at the map, downtown Detroit is the center of a spoked wheel, with Michigan Ave. going west, Grand River going NW, Woodward going North(ish) and Gratiot going NE. While the people mover was going to move people around downtown, there were going to be lines going along those spokes outwards into the suburbs.

But federal funding for cities and things like that quickly dropped off during the Reagan years and Detroit suffered hard.

Today they are building a 3.3 mile light rail track along Woodward (the main street of Detroit), going from Downtown to about the center of the city. People wonder why this isn't going all the way to the suburbs--at least to 8 Mile--and many say it's simply another project destined to fail: a People Mover 2.0.

However, the People Mover is good at what it's used for. It's convenient to go to hockey games and it's much better than walking during the winter.

also, I wanted to note that it can be read that Detroit's suffering is due to a lack of federal funding during the Regan era and that is not the case. I just meant Detroit was declining up to, during, and after that era.
