That's a risk when you're pushing the envelope on every generation, instead of tweaking the same 1970's air-frame and calling it a new aircraft. Unlike Amerilards we in Europe accept the risks of being leaders so we don't cry when it happens.

A340, A330, A330neo, A330 MRTT, A310, literally all based off A300 fuselage actually from the 70s.

A380 superbus; a 70s jumbo trying to make it in the 2010s, literally 40 years behind.

A350 still uses bleed air, 6 cockpit windows, video game control scheme, etc etc...

737 MAX only plane to use Dash-80 fuselage, which is actually even older 1950s design thereby changing it from lazy to cool. Everything else about the plane is new and different.

The 787 and 777 pushed the envelope way more than any other plane in recent times, the A350 was a response to it.

Yeah apparently the airlines back then told Boeing that if they can make it a bit wider than the DC-8 then the 707 would be a sure winner, however the Section 41 among all those planes is pretty much the same.

While that was expected and many early Boeing official renders even showed the Chevrons on the engine cover the recently released finalized configuration on the 777X shows that it won't be having those covers. While the covers were effective at reducing noise they did increase drag some tiny amount, however Boeing says they've found another way to reduce some noise that wouldn't cause increases in fuel use so they got rid of the sawteeth.

That's objectively incorrect. Airbus doesn't even produce an aircraft in the same segment of the 777-9X. The A350-1000 is meant to compete with the 777-8X. And the A350 was more a response to the 787 as a composite aircraft.

There is no direct comparison between the 777X & A350 variants because they are different aircraft. As far as customers are concerned they're comparing 777-8X to A350-1000, 787 to A350-900's, 777-9X to A350-1000...it depends on what they have on their books already, what sort of routes they fly and which particular attribute they care about the most.

777X variants & A350 variants are roughly comparable and are competing in the same space. Some customers will pick a 777X variant, some will pick an A350 variant.
