I've had the same skateboard for over three years. It's ride great. I prefer my bike for obvious reasons but I used to commute on it all the time.

Skateboarders that do more than just push wood break decks. A cheap house board from a local shop is like 30 bucks. Easily lasts a year if you don't board slide. Or freak out and smash the board.

I my city, more people skateboard than walk. The sidewalk is a dangerous place to be on foot in a college town.

They are first and foremost a mode of transportation.
Skateboards have been around since the 1960's and it wasn't until the 1980's and 1990's that the modern interpretations and culture of skateboarding like tricks or skateparks emerged.

so, no. they were never truly transportation, although obviously they can be used in that mode and I applaud it when practical.

shop decks are cheap could go through 10 of those probably.

Not anymore now I just roll up with a 40 and run an old deck on the ledges

Nobody said that. >>888171 and >>888186
are saying they were/can be used for transport.
I agree that a normal 'skateboard' has the main purpose of performing tricks, but longboards and cruisers are made mainly for transportation.
