the artist failed to draw behind the foot the same hard shadow as is shown trailing the wheels, thus fooling your eye into thinking that the foot is off the ground. given that, we naturally assume the foot is on the pedal and therefore the crank is drawn wrong, since where the left crankarm actually is is obscured by the frame and wheel.
with the proper shadow drawn trailing the heel, your brain's logic filter would not have shortcircuited.
