Assuming they're geared the same the MTB would be superior for trail riding and just general riding. A single speed CX bike as an everyday bike doesn't really make sense to me, your kind of wasting the aero advantages of the CX geo by going SS, for racing it kinda makes sense because you don't need that much top speed. CX bikes a lot weaker and not quite as nimble as a MTB.

You can't really compare the two, a better comparison would be a CX bike vs a drop bar 29'er.

that kind of bothers me.
wouldn't it be better to use some sort of 29er geo and add a strap between seatpost and stem to have a new "virtual" triangle for carrying ?

Whenever you shoulder your bike you have to fit your entire forearm through ideally without smashing your elbow into the frame.

Adding a strap wouldn't really help avoiding the hitting your arm when putting it on your shoulder

look up a few cx races on youtube, the racing actually looks fun and isnt some long ass boring road race. Part of being able to put the bike on the shoulder is for possibly running up stairs or other similar obstacles that you just cant quickly ride over.

Yes: It can impress hipsters.

It will go a little faster on pavement and gravel, that's about it. If they have the same tires and same bars then the difference would be negligible.

My riding buddy has 52 13 on his single speed. But I can barely get going with it. He fucking flys in the flats. I have a 44 21 and its just about right for me. I might drop a tooth or two once I get stronger. It kills me on hills right now.

I used to run a 44-45 16 on my bmx when I was still racing. I get it that with bigger wheels you have to use more effort but relly dude hit the gym a little bit.

Your BMX would actually have a lower gearing than his bike, his friends bike has over twice as high gearing.

When my 26" mountain bike was single speed I used to run 32/14 with 165mm cranks which is a little higher and I could still climb fairly well (with a heavier bike) so he could probably do with going a little higher. 19t would match what I had, but for a reasonable speed on the flats I'd probably suggest something around 16-18.

thats more or less what I said isnt it? I just told him to muscle up because he is having so much trouble getting it started.

and just looked it up, in gear inches

w/ 20" wheels 44-16 is 50.3
45-16 is 51.4

his single speed at 44-21 is 55.2

so not a whole lot tougher to get started, maybe he just needs to gain some weight to put on the pedals lol.

He said it was just right for him, the bike he was having trouble getting started was his buddy's bike and with such high gearing I'm not surprised. To give you an idea the equivalent for a BMX with 170mm cranks would be 50/8, close to the limit of what is possible (you'd need to put some road cranks on it).
