Assuming you actually need this special feature, you did not fuck up at all. That's just what they cost. Cargo, fat, dutch, tandem, recumbent, handi-adapted, and other low-volume specialties are all pretty pricy. But if you don't keep it in a tiny apartment or take it inside another vehicle, then ya maybe.

I don't have any use for one personally, but if I rode a lot of commuter trains, or if my office didn't let me park my bike in the hallway, I'd totally get one.

Some relatives of mine who are Very Serious Cyclists have folders for certain types of touring. Their "beater" bikes are worth more than my "nice" bike.

Depends on where you live. Where I live, you are not allowed to carry a bike during rush hours, unless it is folded. In other trains, you have to pay €3.50 for your bike (unless it's folded), which would be around 1500€ a year. In an ICE, only folded bikes are allowed.
Buying a foldable bike is pretty reasonable in some cases.

There's not all that much I can say that someone hasn't already, really.

Pros:

I also wish the velcro strap they give you was a lot longer so that you could run it through both wheels and the frame, to really tie it together. Instead of just one wheel and the handlebar.
