I'll have the opportunity to choose a bicycle from a range of used ones

Haven't seen them and can't provide pictures, but they'll have the typical flaws a used bike will have, rust, flat tires, worn out brake linings, etc

What should I watch out for in this regard? I'm assuming some of these signs of wear and tear are less bad than others, and others so severe that the bike can be thrown away

tl;dr what tips can you give me for getting a used bike?
