You'd need the same amount of space on the whichever side the cylinders and head are than the boxer would take up and you'd be left with a fuckton of empty space on the other side, ruining the side-to-side balance of the car. You'd also start having oiling issues with the cylinders like some Subarus have because the pistons are on their side. They were also able to make the front of the Toyobaru shorter because a boxer is only as long as half of a regular inline 4.

A Slant inline engine is about as far as you can tilt an inline motor.

Name alternatives that are cheaper (sub 10k), are as much fun, have a sporty feel (seating position and low center of gravity), don't have horrendous upkeep costs (e.g. terrible mpg) and are more or less reliable?(and also, have 4 seats)

There are many cars that are cheaper, better and sportier. The only thing the brz has going for it is the nice red stitched trim on the shifter and steering wheel. Subaru designed a turd on this one, give up.

Wrx and evo get worse mileage all others are in the same class. I beat a civic si in a drag race at the track with my brz. Unless a Honda is turbod its not faster. The cars are only cheaper because of the age but I can't get a clean example without hauling it 500 miles.

The beauty of the BRZ is that it's actually new and not something from the 90s that 3 separate boyracers have already beat the hell out of, despite it basically being from the 90s in terms of driving feel and interior design.
