Miata help

Hey /o/
I finally got a Mazda Miata. Its a 1990 with 110k miles on it, and I paid 1.5k USD for it.

It has only one problem though. Basically, I have to rev it to like 3-4k RPM and slowly ease out on the clutch from a stand still. Putting it into first and putting my foot on the floor does nothing. Any idea what could cause this?

I'll have to first have a shop check out to make sure its the clutch. I'm worried its the crankshaft or something since its the 1990 model year and I heard they had crankshaft troubles

You'd know if it was the crankshaft.

To test for sure if it's the clutch, just go out on the freeway and in 4th/5th gear, floor it. If the revs rise without your speed going up, clutch is done.

Nah if I put it in 5th at highway speed, and floor it neither the revs or the speed goes up.. It'll expect me to shift down for more power. I'll be in third going like 65 at redline basically

The one I bought was drivable, I drove it the 2 hr drive back home from where I went and got it.

I had problems doing rotors on my Elantra. I'm not going to be replacing the clutch myself. You can argue all day about it, but some people are more mechnically willing to work on their cars than others. I, however, am willing to pay a place to do the work for me.

Maybe if you're buying snap on. I bet you'll only need a breaker bar, a 10/12/13/16/21mm ratchet and wrench, and penetrating fluid.

Maybe I'm just lucky to have held several mechanic positions. Thing is, I did the clutch on my civic well before I knew ANYTHING about cars. I thought my civic had a v6 because it was more powerful than my camry.

None of it is as complex as you might think.

I see this in an ad and I just see dollar signs.

I'm giving the shortened version of removing the clutch. I can't get into specifics because I've never done one for a CRX. I also haven't done a clutch on a fwd vehicle in 5+ years.

Drain clutch fluid(I think slave is inside the bell housing), remove passenger side wheel(front duh), remove(without disconnecting) brake caliper(suspend it so there's no weight on the brake lines), remove axle/half shaft(should wiggle out), remove bell housing bolts and drop the bell housing(probably weighs like 20 lbs so nbd), And I'm actually pulling a blank now. I think you remove the throw out bearing and clutch now. I'm sure there are better guides than me somewhere else.

I'm no pro but I've replaced engines on boats, motorcycles, and cars. Swapping a miata is as painless as it gets, there's only 8 or so connections on the wiring harness, very straightforward.

I saved up enough to afford this crx lemon but everyone is telling me I can't do it, it's a $1200+ job, etc.

Putting your hardware in bags is for fags, get something like this with a lid on it so you don't go full retard and fuck yourself in the ass when you knock it over and have no idea which bolts go where. Then put a strip of tape on top and write down where the bolt goes when you put it in the case. When all the bolts are back in you pull the tape off and you're done, boom.

Jesus, ok well if you know nothing about cars then don't buy a rat's nest CRX for your first one. Get a saturn or a cavalier, plenty of manuals out there and it will have enough stuff that needs fixing that you'll be able to learn on as you go.

I started out turning wrenches with my old man, brakes, oil, valves, basic service jobs. But that's where it ended, I had to learn the rest almost entirely on my own. My dad didn't teach me how to wrench, but he did show me the importance of being self-sufficient and knowledgeable when it comes to maintaining the things you own. I don't always enjoy the work but you can't beat the feeling of satisfaction when you finish a big project on your own.

sounds weird as hell dude. you can leave the caliper on: all that needs to be done is to take the wheel off, undo the tight as fuck lug nut holding the transaxle to the hub/rotor assembly, undo the nuts holding the transaxle to the diff, drop it on the diff side, then pull it towards the diff to get the spline out of the hub.
