Interestingly in that race series the FIA mandated that the V8s be attached to a car, and the winner was whichever car negotiated the road course, which featured turns, faster. Similar story to Rally, where the Europeans eventually got together and made enough rules to keep American cars from competing since they won everything they entered.

Tires were one of the few things that were really needed to convert most of these to racers. They had heavily redone suspensions and handled quite well even on street tires (there's a review out there of a '69 Boss 302 talking about it). Basically all they really seemed to need back then was racing tires and enough junk pulled out to fit a rollcage for safety and they could go.

Yeah, this. A Boss 302 was basically a Mustang made as close to a road racer as possible while still keeping the car legal for street use. Ditto the Z/28 for the Camaro.

Honda, Toyota, and Nissan repeatedly tried to get the Dodge and Plymouth Neon's banned due to their dominance on track. Showroom Stock racing rules stated that aside from a stripped interior and a roll cage, the cars HAD to be bone stock off the showroom floor.

pretty much. The GTS class Kia competes in also features Mustang's, Cadillac's, Camaro's, Porsche's, Hyundai Genesis Coupe's and Maserati's. So it is more upscale than normal touring car racing.

Just an assumption I made based n the rules I recall from the time they tried to bring Touring Car racing to the United states in the 1990's, and the engines used had to be production based.
The NATCC was pretty much dominated by the Dodge Stratus for the 2 and a half seasons it lasted. I recall the Stratus race car used a heavily worked over 300 HP 2.0L from a Dodge Neon.

Well there you go, NATCC=/=WTCC
From what I know, WTCC hasn't changed much for almost 20 years. They've always been 2.0 litre based production cars with various drive configurations (for a while there were AWD Audis, but they were too heavy to be competitive. Same with the RWD BMWs).

In 2010 the WTCC cruzes kept using the engine the Lacetti touring car was homologated with, which was atcually a C20XE.

from 2011 till today they use a 1.6T racing engine, not based on a produtcion unit.

TC1 isn't any better from what I've seen.

there are very few high profile race series that are truly production based. only shitter series like gt4 and one-make series. most are production shells and suspension pickup points, but custom subframes allowed (gt3, s2000). btcc is only production between the firewall and rear bumper, the entire front end is spec. dtm and supergt are silhouette racers. GTE is turning into semi-silhouette, judging by the new Ford GT GTE.

Saturn was meant to compete with imports but was no reason that the other GM brands couldn't do that as they do today.

And CRX stood for Civic Renaissance eXperimental.
