The guy I was replying to didn't say he was talking specifically about the 350z. He claimed manual is faster than automatic, which is objectively wrong.

In any case, automatic transmissions are more enjoyable to drive because they let you focus on the thrill of driving and the road ahead instead of focusing on operating the clutch and shifting gears.

On public roads you should focus on the road with both hands on the wheel. Not steering with one hand wondering what gear your in or what rpm to switch to.

Even on tracks, a good shifting auto can give manuals a run for its money, especially ones with good paddleshifters. Give it another few years and it won't even be a question. Automatics have come really far and technology will only improve. Unfortunately, humans can't really improve in the same way.

That being said, is it more fun? In my opinion, no.

I simply used quarter mile as an example because it seems to be the benchracing benchmark here.

I'm with you on that, the clutch and gear selector is fun. But autos can select gears pretty damn quick now too - even slushboxes. Technology improves by fucking leaps and bounds. DCTs..well...those aren't even fair.

It makes me sad to admit it though. Honestly, even the manuals these days feel like they're cheating.

Just a matter of preference for me - if you drive an auto and you're a cool guy. I won't think twice. On the other hand, if you drive a manual and think you're top shit because you can use a system my grandma can use....well you're a dick regardless.

Bullshit, driven manual cars all my life, and when I hop on an auto, it's so boring I even lose concentration. When I return to driving manual, I feel right at home

In my short life, I've hooned so fucking much with both manual and auto, and I can say manual isn't much more complicated, while being much, MUCH more fun, rewarding, and thrilling. And I don't fuck up lines, gearshifts, braking points, or steering inputs, if I did I'd end up in a ditch, or upside down, or Equinox'd. If you do fuck up any of those, then you need to push yourself more often, that simple!

If we're being perfectly honest, the entire concept of people driving is fucking terrifying. The faster self-driving cars (actual self-driving cars that can do everything we do today reliably enough to be common) get here, the better. Can you even imagine how great that will be? Once the technology is evolved enough, there will be zero need for our input once we set our destination. Cars will be able to drive way faster too...with computers handling it, you can make your morning commute at a hundred miles an hour and everyone else can too because there's no human error. You could tell your car to take the long route and enjoy the twisty roads while not being distracted by having to control anything, just enjoying the drive.

Fucccckkk I can't wait. It's probably going to be at least a couple of decades before the technology is advanced and common enough that it can be mandated and old-fashioned cars are banned from public roads. Until that happens you can't have your dream drives because some asshole who's distracted with having to work his cars various inputs will still be a liability to you, no matter how good computers get.

The biggest threat to this is going to be the luddites as always.

As opposed to the arcane complexities that are a manual gearbox? Anyone who's driven a manual for more than six months stops paying much attention to it and it's all just muscle memory and reflex. Driving in a boring way is driving in a boring way and driving in an exciting way is driving in an exciting way.

Why do people think that driving a manual takes some huge dedication of focus over driving an automatic? In either, your focus should be on the road and it really shouldn't matter what sort of gearbox you're using. If you have to focus that much harder on using a manual than an auto, you aren't using it correctly.

This but also depends on the car. Some care are fine in both, some care are really lackluster with an auto. The Miata comes to mind for the latter. You could totally still have fun in an automatic miata, if you enjoy driving, but the gap between how easy it is to have fun with one in an auto vs a manual is a lot bigger than say, comparing a manual and auto in a corvette.
