Once it gets piping hot, it isn't going to cool down any time soon.
I learned to cover the knob with one of my extra jackets I have rolling around in the car.
Its pretty nice in the winter though, I have a solid shifter so the heat from the transmission transfers fairly well into the shift knob now, so my shifter is almost always warm. Even at night after I've parked it for a while.
