Just acquired a '99 Subaru Legacy Outback, 30th anniversary edition with 158k miles, seems like there might be a head gasket problem. Coolant smells like gas, exhaust smells funky, oil may be leaking but I'm not sure. It doesn't overheat, as for now,

Would it be worth it to fix? I'm really in love with this car but I dont know if I want to shell out a couple grand to get it fixed. I'm not mechanically inclined and dont have the tools for the job if I were to try.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

You answered your own question.
Either spend "a couple grand to get it fixed", or alternatively if it isn't worth spending that much TO YOU, don't fix it.

Pre-2002 Subaru's are KNOWN for blowing headgaskets. It is expensive to fix, but if you use the updated headgaskets, the problem will never happen again.

Probably head gaskets. It's a known issue with the Subaru EJ25. If you're not actually overheating yet have them replaced ASAP. If it starts overheating there's a good chance the heads will warp and require expensive machining. If you do head gaskets preventively you may luck out and avoid the need for machining the heads which is where the job becomes super expensive.

I had a '98 Outback with the same motor and had to drive it overheating to get out of an unsafe area. Heads warpped and the repair bill was something like $2000. Drove the car a good four or five years after until I decided to get something different.

Also make sure the tensioner is replaced whenever you have the timing belt done. My father cheaped out on that and the tensioner failed a few years later.

One of the subaru forums has a list of the best head gasket mechanics with reviews. I'd check to see if there's one by you to get a price, if the mechanic does it right you'll never have to worry about them fucking up again.

Also replace the timing belt at the same time too.

How "in love" are you? If it is fixed properly, they can last a LONG time; 200-300K mi. They can be expensive to maintain if you don't DIY. I sold my '01 because maintaining it got too pricey. They tend to rust through above the real wheel wells so keep an eye out for that.

If it's in decent shape other than the head gasket you could probably find a buyer that would be willing to hake it off your hands- plenty of Subie fans out there.

My friend has a nearly identical subaru, he's on his third headgasket replacement and wishes he had done an EJ22 swap the first time around. That's what I would recommend.
