I want a sleeper car.
What does /o/ suggest? I personally am leaning towards either a 2006 GTO or a 2010 Taurus SHO.
I live in America, and my budget is pretty slim with 18k as a limit but a preference of 15k.
I want something that just doesn't seem fast but tears shit up.

I have a 2004 GTO. It is kind of a sleeper, because it looks like a Grand Am, however, it is still a coupe. Coupes tend to look sportier. Would this be your only car? If so I recommend a G8 GT, because it's a 4 door, so more unassuming, but just as fast. It's also more practical and better gas mileage

If you're looking at newer, you can get an 09-12 buick regal GS for around 15k...they come in 6 speed manual; 2.0l 4cyl turbo pushing 270 hp & 295 lb ft of torque, with 30 mpg hwy...if this is going to be your only vehicle, very dd-able

Overall though G8's are more expensive than the GTO (less than a SHO, however), and only give me 5 more HP and 2 more doors.

Those SHO's aren't bad cars. A buddy has one and is always telling me stories about how he smoked some fuccboi in a G35 and this and that.

Especially when it gets a little cooler out and Camaro bro's rear tires don't want to hook up, the SHO can do some damage. Plus it is a nice big sedan. I'm kinda a Ferd guy though. +1 for a Legacy GT or Speed6 too. I wish I saw more Speed6's around.

You could also look for a 540i. If you are willing to keep up with maintenance, that is a nice ride.

My friend had one and I drove it many times and didn't really like it. It was alright but who the fuck wants a I4 turbo they sound ass. Could go on for a while with things I didn't like but I just don't think they are worth the price for what they go for. I had an Altima SER at the time he had the speed6 and I liked my SER better.

also bmws suffer from the same problem as a legacy, in that unless you know about the brands and cars you kind of expect them to be fast.

Get a Ford Festiva then, I've heard on the grapevine that you can make them stupid fast with not many mods. Or even more reason for a first gen SHO because boyracers will look at an old 80s sedan and piss themselves when you leave them standing

if you don't mind an older car, you can grab a decent condition late 90s Regal GS...240HP, 270 lb-ft of torque for 2 grand...and save the rest for fuel. 3800 series L67 motor.

Second gen SHO works as well, just DON'T GET A THIRD GEN SHO, they fucked up the third gen by giving it a V8 and a shitty gearbox. Things were slow as fuck.

Since the Mazdaspeed 6 is the first of the MZR engines they have their issue, like the VVT timer/timing chain need to be maintained, power steering pump, etc. I'm not too familiar with the platform, I just know the stuff that crosses over with my MS3. A really good resource is mazdaspeedforums.org, lurk there for a bit and soak in all the info you can.

Could go the Marauder route, they have the 4.6 DOHC which has more potential and aftermarket.

I would avoid the G8, they are expensive for what they are. The new Police Caprice is on the G8 platform, has the same engine, and can be had cheaper at auction.

I guess when I mean premium I largely mean brand prestige and interior quality. Both the BRZ and the Miata are from japanese econobox manufacturers and have crappy forgettable plastic interiors, so I would say neither of them is premium. If any of my normy friends saw a guy rolling down in a base model impreza, their opinion of it would be that it was a cheap japanese hatchback econobox. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I think the Legacy GT would be a decent sleeper because it just looks like a shitty japanese econobox.

True, but at the end of the day, the whole point of a sleeper is that people who don't know shit about cars thing that they're slow and then they turn out to be fast. As you said, a normie can't tell a base model from a GT, so I don't think the price point really matters that much, given very few people know how much they cost anyway.
