I just got home from Team O'Nell 5 day rally course a few days ago. After the first day of initial fuck ups, I was told I was a natural at it and I could look into a career in rally.

I've never honestly considered it, I sort of went out of impulse. But, being told be the O'Neil team I could actually do it I am interested. Should I be a rally driver, /o/? I hear the top guys make in the millions. What are the downsides other than the fairly likely possibility of injury or death?

How would one get into rally? do you need to sink money into it and build your own car until you get picked up by a sponsor? do you just show up at events? I've always been curious how this happens.

Start by going to as many rallies as you can. At least in the US the scene is not all that big comparatively, it's all about making connects. Also don't spend too much on your first car you don't need a goddamn Evo.

injury or death is actually not that common. Most rally drivers die of natural causes or freak accidents like helicopter crashes.

I was told the same thing when I began racing through SCCA events. I have no money to pursue my dreams. How do I get money to race professionally? >:(

Sponsorships or rich relatives.
If you've been told you're a natural at SCCA, prove it and win an SCCA championship.
Then go to potential sponsors and show them what you've already accomplished.

First off, you wont make any money unless you manage to be one of the top drivers in the WRC. The top drivers in Rally America are just doing it for fun and bragging rights. I've got multiple friends that rally in RA and do it just as an expensive hobby and because they love the sport.

As a hobby though it is great. Hundreds of stage miles in an event and you can tailor your budget to suit your income. My friends range from college students scrounging up money to buy new coilovers for their open-light car, to guys buying ex-Group N Subarus and running them for the overall win.

So yeah, it's just an expensive hobby unless you're a badass European competing at WRC level.

Like nationals? I'd have to find a budget to compete across the country for that. A local girl with the same car as mine with about 15k invested in hers won nationals recently. I was always 1-3 seconds off her time and she had a much lighter, faster car than me, and with street legal track tires. I just have shitty Les Schaub tires. I'll keep at it none the less.
