Tell me all you know about the Lexus LS400.

Reason I'm asking is I missed out on a bargain fixer-upperer the other day and I've been obsessed with them ever since. Strongly considering buying one when I have the money ready.

My family has driven an LS400 since 1998, and it was my first car.

The drivetrain is just as invincible as legend would have it, literally just put in oil and gas and it'll never stop running.

With that said, there are other points of failure. The power steering pumps often fail, the LCD panel displaying the radio and temperature information frequently goes out, and the oxygen sensors will sometimes die, giving you a CEL. Also, steering bushings will likely need to be replaced if they haven't.

I got about 22 MPG in mine, which ain't bad for a twenty year old land barge. Handling is vague, but ride and road noise are very good, as you might expect. 240 hp is plenty for cruising down the highway.

Sorry mate. V8 and RWD are only impressive if your suspension isn't made from jello. I'd rather have a 3rd gen F-Body with the 350 because even if it had springs like a fishing boat, at least it looks different from grandma's grocery getter.

Your bargain may not have been a huge bargain; these things sold like crazy when they were new, and it's not hard to find a cheap used one these days.

They're solidly built cars, RWD, IRS, comfy as fuck. The rest of the world got it as a Toyota, and some of it's international platformmates had decent handling and response, but the LS400 was pure landbarge in it's suspension tuning.

have fun fixing your turd gen everyday instead of driving it. An LS400 is superior for a DD, rides like a fucking cloud and still gets up to speed when needed and do a sick skid every once in a while.

Don't kid yourself, both of those machines are beater quality these days so you'd spend about equal garage time on both. one happens to have cheaper parts lol. the point was that neither machine is good and i'd still take the F-Body

Running/driving high-mileage examples can be had under $1000. They are usually pretty much used up, though. "muh lexus reliability" doesn't mean shit after the 4th no-maintainance owner, and these motors burn oil real bad once the odometer gets into the triple digits.

You should be able to get a clean >150,000 mile example for under 3 grand, if you shop carefully and are patient.

But it does depend on where you live. These cars were far more popular on the coasts than in the middle of the country, and the prices reflect that.

This.

The old '90s Lexus, the LS 400 in particular, has seen a stagnation in depreciation because of Lexus reputation. But thanks to people like Farrah, more people are foolish enough to think that they can neglect any old Lexus and expect to get a million miles out of it.

took lexus 5 years to come up with the design.

has air suspention controllers does play up.
fuel senders play up

v8 responds well to forced asperation.
unusual for v8 to come out in manual.

also came out as toyota soarer sc400 not as sought after as ls 400
stud pattern is FORD 5 stud.
nissan 5 stud
mazda 5 stud
mitsi 5 stud (check centres as some have smaller centers)
subaru 5 stud wheels all fit some are different offsets FWD

they have been VIP'd in japan
the do sound good with a good set of pipes.
there are upgrades from TRD if you want them faster but turbos are still DIY.
