Calling all Uber/Lyft/Rideshare drivers

I'm really considering driving for Uber when I turn 21 in a few weeks. I live in Orlando, FL, very close to UCF, so I'm counting on lots of business from college students trying to party and people trying to get to and from the airports.

Am I crazy in thinking that it will be worth it?

What do your work weeks look like?

Do you have another job or do you rely on Uber?

Any bit of info helps. Whether it be tips, stories, or complaints. Thanks guys.

2 people at my work has quit claiming it was because their Uber income has exceeded their job income. I love near Seattle so there is lots of business. You need a car less than 10 years old, no more than 2 blemishes on the body (any dent or defect larder than a quarter) and passes an inspection for mechanical stuff but also things like rear doors must open from the inside, must be unlockable by passengers and horn must work.

Chevy Impalas, Crown Vics (if they can pass inspection, most don't because of police holes) Lincoln Town Car, Priuses are usually good cars to start.

Luckily, I already have a car for it. An 08 Elantra. The car is immaculate aside from highish mileage. I'm hoping that this will make me more money than my current job at Little Caesars.

Dude, just become a taxi cab driver.

Uber is highly unreliable and you compete with other Uber drivers for customers. At least as a Taxi cab driver you get a guaranteed pay + tips.

It's shit.

They have very strict regulations on what you can drive. They make the pay sound like it seems really good, but it fluctuates horribly and you're paid for the time traveled, not miles. You pay for everything. No discounts on anything and they get a good cut of the pay. You're pushing people around in your barely new econobox while getting paid next to nothing most of the time. You have to drive "A LOT" to actually see any income.

If you don't feel like potentially becoming the victim of a murder or carjacking but love to drive, just get your CDL and become a trucker. You will make money and not potentially sink yourself into financial peril like I've seen some idiots do.

I always respond to these threads but , just buy a cheap econobox like honda fit, mitsuibishi mirage, etc for like 7-10K used, 12-15k new, and work full time , you'll make 3-4K a month

Been driving for Uber in Pittsburgh for about 6 months now. I'm heading out to make some money now, but I will return and answer some questions when im back around 11pm EST.

Worst thing i can say is smelly Indians and people who dont speak english use this service alot, but so do upright business types too.

Uber is known for banning drivers over trivial rider complaints.

Knew a guy that got fucked when he picked up a bunch of drunks at a bar and didn't realize how rowdy they were going to get in his car until it was too late. He got pissed off at them messing with shit and they left a complaint which got him banned.

Just know that you're an IC and you pay for everything yourself. That's how Uber's been so successful and made so much money pushing against taxis. The taxes from that income aren't coming from them, it's from the drivers.

There's been strikes over Uber in the bay area because the rates aren't high enough to justify driving people's own cars around the city, but that's the risk you take when you sign up.

I heard it also depends how saturated the market is with other drivers. You can make decent money if you are one of only a few drivers in the area.

One of my buddies drove a cab for a few years. He paid $90/day for the cab to the company, then just gas. So if he worked all day (which isn't too hard driving a cab) andy fares and tips he made beyond the $90 and gas was profit. Plus the cab company owned the car. Only problem was he worked out of Cicero, IL so was in the hood all the time.

Or get your CDL B and get on at one of the local bus companies. I get $14/hr driving for a school bus company only doing sports trips and charter work.

There's a reason why so many retirees drive school buses. It's easy work, pays decent and works well as a on-the-side job.
