Get a Mazdaspeed Protege if you can, they'll be able to keep up better with most of the cars out there today. Otherwise, look at a more recent Mazda3 GT, with the 2.3L engine. With the 5speed manual, it's still as fast as most of the shit 10 years newer. Very underrated cars.
If you live somewhere with lots of snow and salt, don't do it though. They like to rust in salty climates. If you're somewhere southern/sunny, it'll be just fine.
