The reasons behind its inclusion in different cars are different. Regarding the Porsches, for example, they market the symposer as a means for the driver isolate exhaust noise from the cabin when they want to chill and not be bothered by a rumbling exhaust whilst cruising, for example. The driver can then switch it on when he's feeling frisky and wants to stroke his driving peen with some based flat-6 aural stimuli.
The mark 2 Focus ST and RS has a "thumper" in their cars because the cabin was too well-insulated and turbo cars are in general always quieter than NA engines.
