Fantastic little cars, the older ones were little gems, after the MK2 they started to become pretty chubby, boring and crap, They are not unreliable you would have to be an actual moron to say that, MK1's and MK2's are relatively practical, quite fast for their age, style and class and surprisingly good on fuel when driving lax.

I've owned 2 of them and although they are pretty unreliable, they're pretty fun for what they are and the parts are cheap (most parts from other vw of that generation fit). If you can get one cheap, go for it. Look for an R32 or VR6 for a little bit more fun.

/o/ hates them because they retain value and are difficult to afford on gov bennies/fast food paychecks and parents rarely purchase them so they wont get them as a hand me down.

Early Mk4 had electrical issues that gave /o/ most of its bullshit. Later Mk4 onward are solid.

When taken care of properly they are reliable, I have a 400hp GTI (mk5) now with a stock block and only a LSD in the trans and it has given me no issues.

Not that guy but my brothers Jetta and my friends sisters New Beetle both had electrical problems, and electrical problems are very common in the Mexican built VWs from the '90s into the '00s.

Your family full of mechanics has no knowledge of this? Next thing you know they'll say S10/Blazer fuel pumps don't fail more often than most because they're GM fans or that Taurus transmissions will last forever if you change the fluid because they're Ford fans.

I'm not a VW fan, I used to own a MK1 Golf GTI, It was an ok car, never had a single issue with it, its mostly electric free, and had getting on 160k miles on it. Before hand I had a 1967 beetle that car was superior in build quality and was strong, albeit very slow. I currently own an NA MX5 and I love that to bits, don't miss the golf at all, still kinda love that beetle though xP modern VW's are a different story but I was not referring to them, MK2 was the last good golf imo but you cant deny that the early ones were good cars

they both have a lot of little issues
if your really lucky they might last a long time
if your a kid that turns everything you touch to rice then your fucked

sold the gti with over 250k miles on it 100k of which i put on it

>let gf use passat while im out of town
>she takes it to jiffy lube for oil change
>they fill it up with the thickest conventional oil they have
>engine seizes in a matter of days
>jiffy lube buys me an engine

a really big reason the passat is still around
the body has well over 350k miles on it
engine that was swapped is at 150k now
still use it as a daily beater

Put down 400wtq dynojet, have a aftermarket LSD and its not noticeable.

The mk5 and later have torque steer reduction done via ECU so it limits the feel of torque steer.

they are quite the same as their JDM counterparts (Civics) but they love to glorify their Mexican made German piece of engineering.

I have a acquaintance of mine that owns one, and he literally just keeps on talking about how he managed to "dorifto" his car.

I had one, it was rather fun but honestly is not anything that literally a Celica or a Corolla with lowered suspension couldn't do.

It's just a matter of choice. Just don't he that Eurofag that thinks his car is a special snowflake.

This is the car for the most basic of basic bitches. If Hypebeast was a car it'd be a GTI. Among auto enthusiasts a GTI is guaranteed to get you the bare minimum street cred and nothing more. It takes no chances and pushes no boundaries, but it lets you wade in the same waters as other enthusiast cars. It feels tunerish while maintaining some respectability, but overall it's the semi-chub of tuners. Almost there, but not really.

/o/ hates VW. I recently bought an MKIV R32 and I love it. I've had a 2010 MKVI GTI for four years now and it hasn't given me any trouble so far but I'm pretty gentle on my cars and give them a lot of maintenance.

I like them a lot, but I don't own one for a reason. US sold models were built in Mexico, and have tons of reliability issues, especially with electronics. Europoors always seem to claim their German built VWs are reliable.

Newer ones seem to be better. My friend has a 6th generation and hasn't had any issues with it.

They should probably adjust the gears for the american market. I had the mk5 gti and loved it. Didnt have reliability issues either. Its still a golf though - so its pretty much the same as any other golf mk5 reliability wise.
In germany the gears are that long because you just generally drive over 200km/h regularly.

Think of the V6 camry as a representation of the sliding scale of slow. 1990s slow is different than 2015 slow, and the V6 camry is an excellent benchmark. If you get beat by a V6 camry, you're slow, because the V6 camry is designed to be about as fast as is reasonably desirable to the lowest common denominator of non-enthusiast buyers. If you've got a "performance" model of a car and you're telling people that it's fast, you'd better be faster than a fucking camry.

The Mk1 GTI is just awesome - it was meant as a special feature. They had very much room to implement small ideas that make that car special (The Golf - Ball - the seats and so on).

Had Mk3 wolfsburg golf which I enjoyed FAR more and felt so much better to drive than the MkIV GTI I replaced it with :( The MKV GTI I have now is absolutely fantastic. That car taught my wife to love driving (with a stick even). Had some serious issues with the lights but beyond that no problems. Unfortunately my wife has kinda annexed my car so now I have to find something new. I'm excited to try out some different cars I've not tried before (Yea I'm considering an FR-S, deal with it).

For anyone looking for an pretty inexpensive car that is a fabulous daily driver, can function perfectly as a family car, or a drive your friends around car, and is great fun when you're alone on an empty road I can't recommend the MKV enough.
