The first two are irrelevant to supercar buyers as proven with the XJ220, the V6 was superior to the V12 performancewise but nobody wanted it. To the third question, I've heard it IRL and it sounds like garbage, as you would correctly expect.

There's a lot of things wrong that went wrong with XJ220 and it wasn't just because it had a V6.

Also, part of the XJ220's failure is the collapse in the economy. Sales of high-end commodities (like supercars) stalled. Also Jaguar announced that they were making the XJR-15 with a V12 before the XJ220 even hit the streets. Jaguar also jacked up the price for the XJ220 by another 100k GBP. And the car was supposed to come with AWD, but that never made it to production either.

The XJ220 has seen some redemption though on the auction block these days showing some appreciation in price.

I believe the Ford will be a different story. For one, Ford isn't promising anything that they can't deliver. Also the Ecoboost is a proven concept having already won a major race already. Which brings me to my next point: Ford is going to race their car. That's something few manufacturers do with their flagship cars. Not Porsche, not McLaren, and definitely not Ferrari can say the same.

The XJ220 concept car was supposed to be all-wheel drive with a V12 and when buyers found out that it was going to be rear-wheel drive and powered by a Turbo'd V6 (Due to costs, weight and the fact that the XJ220 wasn't an official Jaguar project at first), buyers demanded refunds and Jaguar went to court to try and legally get the pre-sales to come off, which is what really hurt the company financially in the end.

A damn shame too, because the XJ220 was supposedly one hell of a handling car in spite of its weight and size. A race-spec version even won it's class at Le Mans one year too.

It's all about positioning. If they put an ecoboost in a mustang like makes sense in a vaccum it would be faster than the V8. If they make a popularly priced sports car with the ecoboost that's faster than any mustang that's no good either. The only way not to fuck up their model hierarchy was to make something that should be faster than any mustang at onset.

Besides, the GT has always had a truck engine.
