They're cheap. Anyone can afford one. They don't break often. They're easy to fix when they do. Reasonable aftermarket support if you aren't satisfied with the base car. It's a cruiser, not a performer, though there's nothing stopping you from turning it into a performance machine.

Older examples are racking up miles now, and the fleet is thinning with each passing year. A few years ago was the best time to buy one. The market's getting kinda crappy now.

I just got a working miata for 1.5k USD
So far its the most fun I've ever had in a car
It was raining last night and I even threw down the top
Its just a fun car, and its cute looking
Its not safe, or practical, but that's not what its about

I bought one with supposedly 76k miles for 3k. the vin said it had 130 at one point and failed smog 5 times

Well this is an enthusiast board. So its kinda implied you have some knowledge (which few here do.)

It's not hard at all to actually learn about cars. Last year I couldn't tell you what a socket was. This year I'm rebuilding an engine and working as an entry tech at BMW. It just takes effort.

It is on the other hand cheap, parts are massively common and there is alot of information on it.

you could also try a skyline, lots of aftermarket, newer, very reliable if you get one with decent service history / stock condition.

You could also buy an old mazda 323 or KP60 starlet.

A built AE86 is still only $10k or so, there was a nice one for sale that had been fully worked over for that price a few weeks ago.
