Good evening /o/.

I was recently thinking of starting a project to give my friends and I something to do on the weekends and someone suggested that I find and old beat up Beetle and turn it into a dune buggy.

What do you guys think? Anything in particular I should look out for when considering parts or process?

You should have a good tig welder and know how to use it.

i think in general a lot of people are steering away from vw stuff. class 5/1600 is almost non existent now in the US because the parts are harder to find and more expensive.

if you want a fun project that uses a old v dub cant go past the myers manx kit car you will need a complete vw bug hardest bit is shortening the chassis. becausedune buggys are really only a one use car. only on the beaches not really anywhere else.

but a myers manx, you can drive to the beach on the beach and drive it home... and if you dont want to use the vw engine, you can use a corvair or subaru instead.

MIG would be much more useful for OP, and easier learning curve. I always see unfinished VW kit cars on craigs, I would get one of those and build an engine for it rather than starting with a complete bug

actually mine was really really happy on the highway
since theres no body panels, the thing just stayed in its lane like magic. i have never driven anything so stable in a crosswind as a old rail

not really a one trick pony, its actually decent as a car

you forgot the other downside....
dont have anything in your pockets like your wallet. because they tend to fly out if you pockets dont have a zip on them. found that one out the hard way.
