Most cars are seen as appliances these days, so people buy them, run them to the ground, because warranty, and sell them 3 years later. This happens to sports cars aswell.

Ask just about any mechanic that works at an official dealership service, about the horror stories of how well people don't maintain their cars.

It's not worth discussing the Toyobaru on /o/. It's not even that slow, it has 35 more horsepower than my shitbox and weighs 300 pounds less, and I can keep up with other cars just fine. I could have so easily gotten screwed over on that deal. The guy, a British mechanic, took it to auction (it was his friends and he did the last 10 years maintenance on it) and no one would bid higher than 1200

Also this. Actual condition and maintenance history is so much more important than model, year or mileage when you buy used. But people don't seem to get this. Unfortunately there is no definitive way to tell actual condition for sure and maintenance history is anyone's guess if it isn't documented.

Even if you happen to buy a used car in good condition, you still have to be prepared to fix things here or there.

In conclusion, buying used gives you the chance of getting a good car for cheap while also giving you the risk of spending good money on a turd.You should definitely be prepared to fix things when they break because even on a well maintained old car, they sometimes will.

Believe it or not, there is a good reason to by a car new even if used would be cheaper. I would be extremely hesitant to by a used sports car like a WRX or Toyobaru because they attract buyers who want something to beat on and then not take care of properly. Especially for those two cars, even if used is cheaper to start with you might have to spend more than you would on a new one fixing all the shit that's broken.
