/o/ how do I get gud at driving manual?

My first experience with them was so bad I've been too embarrassed to ever try one again. I wish I could just fully depress the clutch to change gears, I think I'm too stupid to depress it to the right amount. Are there any sick tips or should I get the basics down in an auto and then hop in a manual to focus on shifting? I'm sick of being heckled by my friends about driving an automatic, even though my car fucking destroys their relic 4-cyclinder econobox pieces of shit.

I didn't care, but it's annoying as shit to the point I do. Being ostracized from friends I've had since before we all drove feels like shit.

If I can learn manual they'll shut the fuck up, whether I choose to keep on driving auto or not.

Memory was a while ago, I knew with some aspect I had to depress clutch until the car 'gripped' or some shit, and then I did something.

Either way it was annoying as all fuck and felt like shit and it wasn't fun at all.

when going down gears? you are trying to change gear at the wrong rpm. either slow down more so you can smoothly downshift or learn to rev match.

Sounds like you were trying to change gears at the bite point.
Fully disengage the clutch to change gear and you will have very few problems.

I thought I was too shortbus to learn stick as well. I got it down in about a 1 week. Took like 2-3 days before I could drive successfully without stalling.

This was in a 405hp roaring v8 as well

Don't worry about the clutch, that is for experts. Just try shifting into different gears until you find one that fits.

Once you get that down you can start using the clutch.

You're doing it wrong.

Let's say you're accelerating.

You start in first gear.

You reach the appropriate rev level.

You fully depress the clutch pedal.

Then, with the clutch pedal fully depressed, you shift from first gear into second gear.

Then, slowly ease off of the clutch pedal, taking note of the bite point of the clutch.

As you -slowly- continue to release the clutch pedal past the bite point, press down on the accelerator in a proportionately gentle manner.

Rinse and repeat.

Now, you might be asking - how do I know for sure I've found the bite point?

That is an excellent question. You can find it by parking the car, putting it in first and putting the handbrake on.

With the handbrake on and the clutch fully depressed (while in first), slowly, VERY slowly, ease off of the clutch.

The "bite point" is basically where the car will begin to lurch forward and attempt to move (but will not move, because of the handbrake) (hopefully)

Not them, but to add to this;

You really only need to worry about the biting point of the clutch when starting or crawling in first gear.
Once the car is moving and you're picking the higher gears, you can lift your foot fully off the clutch before applying pressure to the accelerator. Just lift the clutch smoothly, or it will be smashing into the plate.
Will save you fucking about and will make the changes smoother.

Go to empty commuter train parking lot on weekend.

Practice stop and go.

Once you can smoothly move the car in first without jerking or stalling, drive around in circles by going no higher than third gear.

When approaching a turn, down shift to second while braking.

For successful launch from a stopped position:

1. Press clutch pedal in(obviously, otherwise you stall)

2. Slowly push in the accelerator 1/4 to 1/2 to the floor or at an acceptable RPM so that it doesn't rev too high.

3. Hold the accelerator at that position, don't be afraid of revving the engine, it won't blow.

4. Slowly, and I mean slowly, lift the clutch pedal. If you go to fast, you'll spin the tires.

5. As you are slowly lifting the clutch pedal, the car will slowly move forward. Do not change the accelerators position, if you let go of the accelerator, you will stall. If you press too much the accelerator as you are lifting the clutch pedal, the wheels will spin.

6. Practice stop and go until you can successfully move forward from a stop without spinning the wheels or stalling.

as someone who just bought their first car and was a manual - several an/o/ns have already shared what you should be doing, but let me share my experience in hopes that you'll have just an easy time picking it up as i did

i knew about the concepts - what does the clutch actually do in the car, why it's important, why you stall. i think this theoretical knowledge is good to know because when you do stall or find yourself sitting in a car with manual transmission, you can have an idea or dialogue with yourself about why things happened the way they did. so if you don't know/understand, it would be very helpful to look up videos explaining the role of the clutch in a car imo

then, look up videos on youtube of how to drive a manual - look at them ALL. mime the actions and think to yourself what has to happen in what steps. dream about shifting.

then, acquire a car, and an empty lot, and do what anons have suggested in this thread to practice. bring a buddy who does have experience driving a manual - they won't judge, because they for sure have stalled the car before. we all have. it's the unequivocal humble pie all manual drivers have had a piece of before.

i stalled 2-3 times in about an hour of driving on my first night with my car about a month ago. the second night i stalled once. after that, i've only stalled on a steep hill start where i got sloppy. the only mistakes ive made since were related to shifting (ie starting in the wrong gear because i wasn't paying attention when i came to a stop in making sure i was in first instead of 3rd l o l)

o and protip : the ezpz way to start on a hill is to keep your right foot on the brake, and ofc your left is on the clutch while you're at a stop. when you want to get going, slowly let off the clutch until you see the revs dip on your tach, or youll hear your engine kinda die in sound - at this point, HOLD the clutch at that position and add gas, let go of the clutch slowly only as you feel momentum and you're moving

Learning to drive takes about 2 hours. Learning to drive good anywhere from 2 to 8 months.

Best thing you can do is drive everywhere with a friend who knows manual and can give you pointers, or any friend and just look at them when you shift. Their body movement will reveal a lot about your driving.
You anticipate your shifts, and to you it feels smooth. Passengers don't. Observe them, and make it smoother.

I taught myself to drive a motorcycle (manual) by taking it out super late at night when there was no traffic. Rode it around town stalling every 10 feet. Complete. Fucking. Shitshow. Thought the thing must have been broken. But by the next day I managed to get around in traffic only stalling a few times. A month later I could do it in my sleep it was so ingrained.

No joke, watch Gone in 60 Seconds. Specifically the chase scenes at the end with the GT 500. I had a general idea of driving stick, tried it a couple times and was an utter shit show. Watching that scene shows you exactly what you need to be doing.
