Most of what Ford offers isn't really tuned adequately, especially if it's mated to an automatic gearbox. The Focus STs are sporty, but those engines will probably die before 200,000km because people don't know how to take care of them. They think it's like a traditional NA engine and it's not, there is a lot more stress and heat. I routinely see older Mazda3s with the 2.0 and 2.3 engines for sale, well over 200,000km. Problem is they rust, so even if the engine is fine the body will be crap.
Basically, Ford produces lower quality vehicles on average. There is no statistical evidence to suggest otherwise, and I have my own anecdotal evidence (I've owned 3 F150s, a Taurus, and an old Aerostar) to affirm my opinion of them. They make cheap vehicles, and I don't believe in spending money on a piece of shit. I did it for years because I got A-plan pricing, but it was a huge waste of my money in the long run.
Even with their recalls, Japs still produce the best vehicles. Failing that, I'd sooner buy something European. If I'm going to suffer the inconveniences and repair bills, it might as well be for a nice car that's worth driving, not a crusty shitbox Ford.
