Hey /o/, I'm going to look at a manual transmission '98 BMW 323IS with 123k miles on it tomorrow and I was wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking for tomorrow. I ended up getting completely shafted last time I bought a car (My own fault for not checking the car over well enough) and I don't want to make the same mistake again. Any tips?

Id say check fluids, ask if its all stock, then just test drive to check transmission/brakes etc.

Yeah the head gasket is the only problem on the E36s, the cooling system and electrical are bulletproof. Even if there were a problem the OP can just ask the magic gnome that lives in the coolant overflow reservoir if a problem is coming soon, then he can avoid it.

Check for torn subframe mounts, especially in the rear. E36 and 46 are known for this issue and it is a bitch to repair.

Check seals and the evap system. If you see oil spray residue around the breather area walk away.

M52's have no problems with had gaskets as far as i am aware, the most common problems are involving the cooling system, which NEEDS to be entirely overhauled by 85k miles, or else the car will overheat and eat shit.

Ask about that, if they haven't done it you can probably haggle a fuckload.

Also rear shock mounts that rattle, and the subframe welds that tend to eat shit aswell.

Anyway, what should you check-

By posting up a thread like this the day before you look at it, you are making the same mistake again. Spend a week on bimmerforums before you inspect the car.

if you're actually serious about buying the car pay a mechanic that you trust to inspect it during the test drive, it's always good to get a second opinion
