I'm new here and looking to get started on being more capable in the wilderness. Most of the links in the sticky are broken and googling so far has lead me through a lot of perfunctory blogs.

Can I get some help with good starting resources for gear, navigation, basic survival tips, etc?

So I've been traveling a lot more lately after finishing college and have been wanting to create a travel journal of places I've been just so I can look back one day of all the places I've been.

At first I was thinking of just keeping a physical journal, but then I started thinking of something that could be easier to update and show the exact locations of where I visited. Currently the best idea I have in mind is Google earth since I can place markers on the exact places I visited (hiking trails, landmarks parks etc.) and can even include a discription on each marker of what I did there. I also figure having it on the computer works easier for being able to make a backup as opposed to a physical copy.

Does anyone else do something like this or have any ideas of something that might work better?

Greetings /out/

I had the opportunity to go to an indoor climbing gym the other day and ended up really enjoying it. I was surprised at how friendly everyone was too. Complete strangers would stand behind others to help climbers get their routes right or body placements correct; I thought that was pretty neat. I was curious as to who was on here who climbed regularly, whether at your local indoor, or outdoor somewhere and you think of it.

I surf regularly and felt that this was a good alternative to keep strength up through lulls in swells. Also, I live in Hawaii and I think there area a few small bouldering spots, but the rock is basalt and quite crumbly if anyone wanted to create any safe, long routes up a face so that style is out of the question.

I suppose I could scour the internet for tips, but I trust most of you better. Tips on route planning, how you like to climb, where you like to climb, this bit of gear vs. that bit of gear would be interesting to read from you.

Currently I have an Arc'Teryx A300a harness:

For shoes I'm looking at either La Sportiva Solutions or Oxygyms.

Side note: I'll be in Seattle over thanksgiving if anyone wants to get together to hit up a climbing facility.

hey /out, was just asking myself what are the practical differences between a canoe and a kayak ? thinking about a long trip (1-2 weeks) in regular conditions (like weather and river difficulty)

First f all sorry if the thread end being gross as fuck but I need your guys help. So, since kid I play football and indoor football(futsal) and I guess it fucked up my big toes nail.

Anyways, every time I go /out/ or even just walking on daily basis I have huge pain no matter the shoes I'm wearing, I guess I have some kind type chronicle ingrown nail, if that even exists.

My question is do you guys know any method to fix this shit or at least relieve the pain without painkillers? Maybe I'm being a pussy but when you do hikes of 30/40 km it sucks balls really hard. Thanks in advance.

Hey /out/ I've been trying to find a place in southern GA where I can take my truck out into the woods, set up a tent and just drop off the grid for a weekend but all I've been able to find are campsites. I don't want to stay in a campground, I don't like people and those places just don't do it for me. Does anybody have any advice?
