When I was younger, I used to be /out/ all the time. The older I got, the less time it seemed I had. I now have a wife and 2 children. I really want to back into and get my family into being /out/ also. Any advice on where to start/good gear for day trips? I am in relatively good shape and live near the Smoky Mountains.

How do you guys feel about these? I was thinking about getting some but they're kind of ugly and I don't think I really need them. Just curious on how you all feel.

Junk If you need rubber boots buy Xtratufs, those are the only acceptable option.

I've realized that the sticky is extremely outdated. Half the sites don't work anymore. Can we get a mod to update the sticky and also can the community start a pastebin and maybe some buyers and beginners guides? New people are coming here everyday for questions and its annoying to see the same threads everyday.

Greetings /out/laws, Sydney AU fag here. Having successfully cultivated a bed of lion ants, I wish to plant something a little less carnivorous, and come to you asking what to plant. This spot basically gets no direct sunlight (south facing) and has been a wasteland for as long as we have lived here. We would like to grow something colourful to fill the bed, or perhaps a flowering shrub up to the level of the bricks. I am open to any landscape suggestions though, the greenest my thumb has ever been was growing pot when I was a kid, but even then, its a weed, so it's not like that's anything to brag about anyway. Cheers guys!

I would suggest something like liriope - nice green foliage through year, sick purple colour in autumn. Low maintenance, cut back after flowering and thats about it.

pinapples are a stupid idea, try going to bunnings and asking for shade dwelling plants, they will have at least 2 rows of choices. as a fellow syd fag iv got a half an idea. i have a similar garden, hydranges are my personal favorite. the colour of the flowers and be changes from blue to whit to purple depending on the PH of the soil but if that a bit to far its all good, i sugest trying them and see how it goes, keep them watered for the first 3 days and then drop back to watering once every 2 or three days for a month or so and after that you wont have to worry about them at all. goodluck

Hey /out/ I have a little question for you, what's the worst that can happen to a person who is caught in a sandstorm with no protection? To clarify, I'm not travelling to any desert, but I've been wondering what it's like to be trapped in of those.

Do you have to wear a respirator? I imagine inhaling that much sand would be bad.

the one in OPs pic looks pretty bad though. something like that we would probably seek shelter and wait. but thats from the outside. inside one of those things it can look alot different. pretty much like a super hazy day.

Eh, it's not that bad. Like being in a blizzard, except it's sand and dust instead of snow. Put on goggles and pull a scarf over your mouth and you barely even notice it.

Got a story from conscription, but it's from a the perspective of being the one who (unintentionally) scared some hikers.>late summer on a week long exercise in the woods in military training grounds (forested area) >set up camp in the middle of nowhere in the forest >me and another guy are appointed guard duty between 00-02 >pretty much means that you walk around for two hours and make sure that everything is okay >after half an hour or so, while being just outside the outer perimeter of the camp we spot a light source about 100 m away on the other side of a clearing in the forest >go to investigate >when we have about half the distance left we see a shadow that quickly moves toward the light source >as we come closer we see that it's a civilian looking tent with a light source lit up inside >call it in on the radio since there should not be any civilians there >deicide to make contact and ask them what they're doing there >as come up to the tent, standing just outside the entrance, about to ask if anyone is there/awake we hear a trembling voice saying "please leave us alone, we haven't seen or done anything, I promise" 1/2
Anonymous
Quoted By:
>>617744 >tell them who we are and ask if they could come out >they open up the entrance and as they see us they both look really relieved >turns out they are a young couple who were just out hiking for the weekend and somehow they didn't know that they weren't allowed to camp there >a little bit earlier they had been sharing some ghost stories in the tent >the girl had then left the tent to pee >while going back to the tent she had seen two shadows walking towards the tent from a distance (us) and, ran back and got all scared and for some reason he also got scared >when they heard us calling it in on the radio they still didn't realize who we were and starting to think if they had stumbled upon some criminal activity, hence the "please leave us alone"-comment >called in a shortened version of it all on the radio >get told that they may stay, but have to leave early next morning >tell them were our camp is, if they would experience any further problems >as we leave we manage to keep it together, but when when we're sure they can't hear us we break out laughing >live off of it for the rest of the week 2/2
