scary /out/ stories.

No.611105 ViewReplyReportDelete
ok, so lets hear your scariest real-life-ghost stories. im talking shit you just can't explain or stuff you've seen that was just plain terrifying.

i'll start off.
>be 16(now 23)
>be in the woods with 3 friends, all same age.
>camping fun. fishing/hunting/shooting etc.
>night falls
>camp is next to a river
>middle of the night we hear plashing noises
>figure it's deer cus it sounds big
>go to river bank with win 70 300.
>look down and see deer carcass
>still bleeding and twitching
>look around, see shit moving in the brush
(there are no wolves, bears or cougars in southern michigan)
>huge visible bite marks on dying deer
>death screech(might have been an owl)
>everyone is freaked out, take turns on watch
>leave in the morning
>3 weeks later 2 hikers turn up dead from similar wounds
>go to forest ranger station and tell him what he heard and saw
>tells us to stay out of that part of the woods
>won't say why cus pending investigation.
>never went back
what the fuck was it?

Off-Road vehicle

No.613945 ViewReplyReportDelete
Alright so recently I've been thinking of selling my 350z and buying an SUV for some off-roading. Nothing too serious like rock crawling or sand dunes; just like old logging trails to get to some far out campsites, and maybe a couple mudholes.

The thing is, I'm having a hard time picking out a good vehicle to buy. I can't get a truck because I live in the Pacific Northwest and it rains all the god damn time, so I need the large covered cabin of an SUV. But at the same time I hate the fuckhueg look of almost all SUVs.

I won't be doing any modifications as I'm not planning to get super super serious about off-roading, but I want something that can take me off the beaten path with relatively low risk.

TL;DR
I'm looking for a smaller (2 door?) SUV that will be a good off-roader in stock form. Any ideas?

How do I into learning to be an outdoorsman?

Never got into it due to my dad not being an outdoorsy guy and never having friends be outdoorsy, but it looks like fun and I've been camping a few times so I'd like to know how to really get into it.

Just get a backpack full of supplies and a tent and just go or what?

Also hunting seems like fun.

I want to run my kernel of an idea past the sc/out/s, and see what I'm lacking or forgetting

>planning road trip next spring
>have lots of gear, but definitely need to buy more. Own a bivvy tent but its quite small
>have a decent amount of money, in the way of $2-3k
>own a Suburu with few enough miles to make it
>plan on buying bag of rice and beans, flavorings, and largely eating that and other cheap preservables.
>Have decent amount of experience in hiking, camping, but not a lot in intensive travel
>Driving west first to my friend in Utah, and then probably up the Canadian Rockies

So those are the perimeters, here are the parts I am less sure of...
>want to move from Fed land reservation to Fed land, essentially disperse camp for free each night
>Don't know what kind of trouble I could get in for bringing my knife/knives/hatchets, and a .22 bolt action
>Don't know how to address the crime threat
>Most stories I read have travelers staying with or working with locals they recently met, is this a common situation?
>Is $2K enough money

Any advice or input would be appreciated, or where I can find answers to these questions on my own.

/out/ stickers?

No.612438 ViewReplyReportDelete
so during the recent patch threads it occurred to me that I'd actually love to have stickers, maybe more than patches. So one thing led to another and I priced out some stickers. Basically I figure I can cover the costs of shipping at $0.75 CAD for the circle bear, $1.00 CAD for the mora bear, and $1.00$ CAD for the shield bear. they are die cut as the black on the pictures to follow indicate. circle is 2.5" diameter, shields are 3.0" in height.

The shipping costs would be:
$0.85 CAD for Canada
$1.20 CAD for USA
and $2.50 CAD for anywhere else in the world

(sorry Canada Post sucks)

all told I would stand to make about $75 in profit if I sold them all at the rates I listed. It does give me a little bit of a safety net though. The thing is I can get an additional 20% off right now which makes them that much cheaper in bulk. It would be even cheaper per unit if we went over 300 per one design but I felt the current numbers were safe. If there's interest I'll do the order but give me some idea if the size, numbers, etc are good. I ordered a set of 6 of each already but they won't get here til November and the 20% off code is only good until October 23.

Mmm...she did the Dutch Oven last night....

No.614675 ViewReplyReportDelete
So /b/os, I was cooking dinner on my cast iron this night and while cleaning it up after I got to thinking how it was to travel with a Dutch oven for Lewis and Clark. I saw one online that was 3/4th qt right at 3lbs. Which is a lot but not terrible for a Dutch.
Any of you guys backpack or camp with a Dutch?
>bonuspoints: figure out that Sacajawea was alone for extended periods of time with Lewis and Clark. She definitely DP'd it more than once.

I just picked one of these up at a yard sale. My problem is is that the bottle is old and rusty as hell. How do you clean this enough to safely drink from it? The dishwasher won't clean it fully
