How do you heat your cabin /out/ in the woods ? I habe a wood stove, but can only burn deadfall because of law. I have no time to pick up sufficient firewood so i end up buying some and hauling it to said cabin. I am thinking of upgrading to a oil burning furnance, any experience ? Also what do you do about light, what use are petroleum lamps ?

We had a blizzard in vermont last year that killed our power for a week. Having glass kerosene lamps were very useful.

How remote is the cabin, can you drive to it or do you have to hike in? Do you have electricity? Until I know more my suggestion would be propane tanks. 40lb tanks aren't to bad to lug, and 100lb aren't bad if you can drive close to where you store them. You can use them for heat, cooking, light, refrigeration with some copper piping.

I can drive within about 2km to the cabin, after that there is a small "goat path" so narrow, a ATV cannot pass, thoug i can push a wheelbarrow to the cabin.

spend more time picking up deadfall,

get some kerosene lamps, they light and heat well

haul in a pallet of peat moss bricks at the beginning of the season, theyre great fire extenders

Wood pellets might be worth considering, just for portability. For lighting you might want to consider a non-flammable solution, like a simple solar + LED light setup. Knocking a kerosene lamp over while lit is a good way to lose the whole cabin, and candles get wax everywhere. It's also one less consumable to haul in each visit.

spray foam between any and all logs carefully with a spray water mister in the other hand. Seal up all non-opening windows and add a second one inside or outside the same window, seal that. Get non decomposing packing peanuts and litter the vacant space below your cabin. Get that metallic thin insulating sheeting and do your roof.

Solar and wind/winding for light. Pile of wood is a classic source of heat. Self made peat-mos via a sanding pool of water and all the grass clippings from your push mower/weeding, double as septic pond if necessary with required fish/plants/etc. Solar water heater/house warmer. Reflectors and mirrors. Dry your shit in the sun and burn it(desperate and works only on hot days/ freezing nights/ crack weather)

I haven't had to cut my own firewood for years. I do save some to split by hand, but that's just for recreation.

A wood pellet stove would work, you'd just have to haul sacks of pellets to the cabin. They burn well and will keep it warm.

Op here,
my fear with insulation is if it is not done right (just slabbing styrofoam on the walls) condensation will form. A friend of mine had the Problem and ended up stripping all the insulation back down again.

Bear with me on this I'm American, a 40 lb propane tank weights full about 32 kg, pretty easy to haul in a wheelbarrow or fit 2 km. You can get cheap propane heaters that don't need electricity (it's how my camp is heated), propane lamps and ranges are pretty popular and not hard to install once you learn how, most expensive part will be the copper line. Propane refrigerators are expensive but pretty easy to maintain. You can also use the small propane or coleman fuel lanterns for light. My grandfather used to deliver 100lb propane tanks by plane to remote locations, so here in northeast U.S. it is pretty much standard fuel to these places, although they would heat with wood, everything else was propane.

Same guy here. also to think about oil furnaces will need a dedicated chimney and need annual cleaning from a technician (they are pretty dirty) probably also need electricity to run. Youll still need to lug in fuel st 8 lbs a gallon.

Is your cabin log or stick built?

Thanks for the input. It is more like a stick build but the walls are solid wooden paneles (1x2m), 11mm thick, screwed onto a wood constriction.

A lot of areas will let you get a license for cutting down trees for personal use. In my area you can pretty easily call fish and game, get a permit, and chop down a couple trees for firewood. Also check around for people clearing land, they may allow you to chop down their trees for firewood so that they don't have to clear the land themselves.

Wow, I'm studying geography at uni and we had a Croatian grad-student give us a guest lecture about kart landscapes in croatia. She showed us some photos of the plitvice lakes, some islands, and the red and blue lakes near her home town, Imotski. Oh, and some photos of bears/wolfs etc, but she said there's only a few hundred left in the wild, maybe more for bears :(

All I have to say is Croatia seems fucking beautiful and I hope you make the most of living there.

On a side note, have you heard of this 'blue lake' near Imotski? Is it well known in Croatia? I only ask because where I grew up (Mount Gambier, in South Australia) we also had a sinkhole/doline lake which we called 'the blue lake', and the geology of the area is similar to that in croatia (limestone, karst), so that was kind of interesting to me.

I am of the opinion that you should just process wood on the down low. Instead of chopping them down you can try pulling them down with a winch. This is what the forestry commission do to simulate gale force wind effects on trees. Once past 10 degree to the perpendicular they go pretty quick and to a later observer it would look like a natural fall

The blue lake is quite a popular school day trip destination around the area, although is seems nobody of the kids ever wants to come back there, but thats due to a general lack of interesst in the /out/doors. Also one kid from my school was there with this parents, and Fell to death, but this was over 20years ago. Unfoutuneatly i do not know more of it
