Anyone have experience with dry suits.

I want to keep kayak fishing into the winter until the eater freezes over and am looking to get a dry suit. I don't normally get soaked while fishing from my kayak but I do get wet around the legs and arms.

Dry suit seem to range greatly in prices. $175 to $1000+

Is a good dry suit worth it? Could I get by with a cheap one? Skip the dry suit altogether and just dress warm and in layers?

Don't get a dry suit, get a wet suit. What is your area? How cold will the water be when you are fishing?

From my understanding, a wet suit needs to be wet to work, I am hoping to stay mostly dry.

If you do decide on getting a dry suit, go with Ursuit. Been using Ursuit for years now, not once has an Ursuit drysuit failed on me. They are somewhat costly, and if you don't plan on using the dry suit a lot, then it probably isn't worth it.

In my experience, cheap drysuits are quite prone to break (especially the water proof zipper, which cost quite a bit to replace) and don't last very long under high workload and high usage. In my opinion, investing in a good dry suit which is a bit expensive is definitely worth it, not only for the comfort factor, but also the safety in case something goes wrong.

In the end however, it is up to you really, do you want a dry suit which is going to cost, but will be of high quality and will last you a good couple years, or do you want a cheap dry suit which will last you a year or two and then just fall apart.

Dressing warm and in layers is fine if you don't fall into the water, but if you do you're somewhat fucked if you can't get to land quickly as all that extra weight of clothing is going to weigh you down considerably, that is if you don't have a life vest. That's another benefit of a dry suit, inbuilt flotation. Plus, nothing will keep you warmer in the water than a dry suit with a couple layers of clothing underneath (apart from a hot water suit, but that's primarily only used in commercial diving)

Alright let me help you out here.
When you go out on the water in a small craft you need to dress for immersion, because it will happen. If you dress in "warm layers" and go in, you will die.
If you go with a wet suit your layering will be... Wetsuit base, insulating mid, splash gear outer.
If you go with a dry suit your layering will be...
Insulating layers as base, drysuit as outer.

Dude stop.

The wet suit doesn't need to be wet! The wetsuit is there incase you go into the water, your insulating layers and splash suit are there to keep to warm and dry.

It's hard to say one way or another what you should do without a ton more information.

Dry suits will be warmer than wet suits, but if you're only on flat water with relatively low chance of swimming and you'll never be far from help, I'd say a drysuit is overkill.

It sounds like what you need is a splash top or dry top to keep small drops of water from getting you wet, not total protection from giant waves and possible swims.

Basically-

Also remember NEVER TO WEAR COTTON ON THE WATER! I wear fleece sweat pants under my "farmer john" style wetsuit (Looks like overalls), an underarmor shirt, a fleece, and then a splash/dry top when it gets nasty out because I'm too fucking poor for a dry suit (For whitewater rafting) but that's only because I know I'll be off the water in a few hours. If warmth was a dozen hours away I wouldn't go out in that shit, but I'm also soaked at the end of the day and get to paddle for warmth, whereas you'll ideally stay dry-ish but not move that much.......
IMO, a dry suit is overkill if you aren't fishing in a remote area far from shore.........

That shit stays wet, gets heavy, doesn't dry, and doesn't retain ANY thermal capacity. IE- It's fucking worthless for water. Wool, nylon, synthetic, etc etc is your friend!

And like >>613943 said, don't listen to this guy (>>613942). You should not get wet if you don't have to, and a wet suit doesn't require being wet to function, it just works well when wet.

ALSO, if you do get a dry suit, don't forget to "burp" or vent it.... Seal it up on yourself, then get into the water and pull the neck gasket away from you as you slowly dip yourself into the water, this will push all the air out of the suit. Then it won't poof up as you paddle/sit in the kayak, and if you take a swim the pressure in the suit will press on your neck and choke you out as well as making it very difficult to swim. An un-burped suit is as good as no suit......

I will only be on small lakes, no more than half hour from the car. I have only fallen off 2 times in 3 years and I will be more cautious in cold water. If I get too wet I would just pack it in for the day.

Didn't even know about Splash gear before. Looking at splash gear on REI's site right now.

It really sounds like this is all you need, or even just a rain jacket with draw cords I've used a ski-shell as a dry top on class V cold fucking rivers and been happy and dry come days end, but I also didn't take any swims. If you swim in splash gear, you'll be wet. Also, do lookup water/air temp information and hypothermia times, if you've never seen it before you might be surprised to see how little time it takes to get very dangerously cold.
