I just picked one of these up at a yard sale. My problem is is that the bottle is old and rusty as hell. How do you clean this enough to safely drink from it? The dishwasher won't clean it fully

Yeah buying anything like that at a yard sale probably wasnt very smart. Just dish the money and get something new. In the military we got issued canteens but no one would ever use them and just buy their own, becuase the ones you get issued someone could hve pissed in or have been used for dip spit. And you can clean for hours but is it worth it? Or worth the 10$ to go buy a new nalgene.

If it's rusty inside, you shouldn't bother. But for non-rusty used containers, I have a simple method:
Bleach, followed by boiling water, followed by more bleach, followed by some serious soap and scrubbing. It may seem excessive, but for all you know someone was using it as a cum bucket and left it under a radiator.
