Anyone else here read why they are /out/?

i live in wyoming, and whenever i get a chance to go to Esterbrook or Medicine Bow, i always bring my big 'ol box of books.

Something about reading Tolkien in the middle of the woods, or while sitting by your rod waiting for a catch on the river

people often joke about the Tolkien's mediocre writing abilities. i personally think his descriptions of nature and the passing of seasons are brilliant.

dude what?! are you serious? the man created his own fictional language, and basically a bible for an entire fictional universe

and yeah, i agree with you on his descriptions of nature, they are absolutely stunning.

but my favorite parts are the epic and grand scale sized battles, i remember sitting outside by a creek and reading in the silmarillion that "Feanor fought off dozens of fiery balrogs in an epic battle, but was finally taken down by Gothmog, lord of the balrogs" i remember having to stop reading and say out loud "holy shit"

which people always reckon is brilliant, but then kinda imply that was his one true shine, and disregard him as a writer. i obviously disagree ...

and LOL i know exactly what you mean. i read the silmarillion after lotr and seeing noldors take on multiple balrogs at once when gandalf couldnt take one by himself provoked similar reactions. lotr is the on i read over and over, but i love the silmarillion and unfinished tales too. got a soft spot for poor cursed turin in particular.

if you want overly long nature descriptions and you're into fantasy, David Eddings is your guy...

I used to tot a paperback when out but these days I find it easier to listen to an audiobook.

I can sit there next to the fire as the sun goes down soaking in the ambiance listening to whatever takes my fancy atm

ya, I generally try to read fiction that takes place in the climate where I'm camping.
-Recently went camping in Big Bend NP and spent an hour each night reading Blood Meridian by Cormack McCarthy. awesome read
- Read Hemmingway's Old Man and the Sea when in south Florida. ya, I know it takes place in Cuba, but I went deep sea fishing
-Grapes of Wrath in central California
It adds to the atmosphere and you get a better appreciation of what the author is conveying and the place, itself
I also drink a ton a whiskey
