Real speculation:

When will film die bros?
When it is cease to be produced?

Has the recent revival of film (that seems to have accompanied the revival of vinyl records) been enough to continue to stimulate the market?

How much longer will we have? 2025? 2035? Will you stock up at the announcement of discontinuation and have film to last you the rest of your life? (or sell for the increased value)

Will larger formats die out first?

People still use goddamn glass plates, son.

I'm actually more interested in the state of the digital camera. Point and shoot sales are dropping insanely fast, thanks to cellphones.

I think mirrorless will overtake DSLRs eventually.

both of those problems will change easily.

my X-T1 has a poor battery life compared to the A7 but I mean I get at least 350 fucking photos per battery. a battery is the size of two matchbooks and swaps out in 3 seconds. not a big deal. Lenses will come with time, its still new.

Nikon are still slightly ahead of Sony. Sony have tons of problems with continuous/auto bracketing which is horrible for HDR shooters which are extremely common atm. Even the A7R II has issues shooting continuous modes (images are made 14 bit in single and 13 in continuous) which is retarded and causing people who know this to stick with Nikon. Battery life isn't a drawback because anyone who is not a retard will buy like 3 spare batteries all for $10. You can also get insanely good Sony lenses for prices like $350 and $650. The FE Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 ZA goes for around £450 on eBay and is the most insanely sharp and fast lens, even scores 3rd best around on dxomark. I actually find that the lens is too sharp which is a useful problem to have, allows me to increase noise reduction at the cost of a bit of sharpness then maybe even reduce the sharpness a little more. The FE 28mm F2 is also insane and costs like £280.

Except for optical viewfinders. Every mirror less camera EVF I've looked through had me feeling like I was playing Counterstrike Source on a 386 with a green and black monitor, compared to the optical viewfinders. They're all terribly laggy and pixelated, and just don't feel refined.

The single mirror less camera that I enjoy using is my X-Pro 1, simply because it's the only one available with an optical finder.

Also, film won't ever fully die out. Fuji, Kodak, and I think Ilford all made an agreement to continue production of certain films.

We may become incredibly limited on films we can buy in the future, but we won't have to worry about never being able to buy some.

Which cameras have you tried? I agreed with you before, but the EVF on the A7S (at least) has no lag, and the amplified image it displays is better than what I can see with my eyes.

Glass plates are actually quite a bit easier to keep going than color film.

One you can make in your basement, the other requires an industrial process.

A6000, A7r, XT 1, X-Pro 1 in EVF mode, and a handful of other randoms. Panasonic and Olympus somethings, I think.

Maybe it's just my eyes or something. Some people can't tell the difference, but they all make me feel like I'm viewing things in 1990's 12 fps slow motion movie effect or something.

It's perfectly fine for still life, macro, or studio portraits, but street, pj, and other documentary style shooting makes them unbearable for me.

With the looming promise of Film Ferrania, Rollei/Agfa's development of new film type, Kodak's stabilizing profits, and slightly increased film sales compared to even 7 years ago, film is plain and simply here to stay. Even certain motion picture DOPs still use film for photography, and likely will continue for a very, very long time. Film will certainly outlive DSLRs as well as any of us on this board.

The EVF is actually what made me fall in love with the camera, after I was enchanted by all the dials

Film has been relegated to a niche market now, but I don't think it will ever truly die. People still ride horses today, even though cars have long overtaken them, but they do it for recreation rather than transportation. you can even argue that they have practical value above cars in very specific situations, but they're obviously not mainstream because cars were better in almost every way.
Same goes with film vs digital. digital is mainstream because it's faster and more convenient than film, but people still shoot film for fun, and specific situations where they want a desired look that's easier to get with film.

Indeed, LF film is a growth market at the moment: those who use it are sticking with it, and more people are coming in after having their attention drawn to IQ from digital starting points. And while companies keep making the film, they can keep making all formats for the buyers who want that.

B/W and C41 are definitely here to stay. E6 might go the way of Kodachrome, but not this year or the next.
