If you are smart, you can infer a lot from reading about other photographers. For example, Robert Frank took about 28,000 shots when making his book, "The Americans"
He edited that down to about 1000, and edited that down to 83 for the book. That's almost 800 rolls of film. Whole ROLLS had shots he didn't use.
