I think the tutorial is going at a fairly reasonable speed. If you get stuck or think it's too fast it's not impossible to rewind a few seconds and pause till you figure out what's going on. I learned how to fold pretty fast, but results may vary.

If you still want to try the ones in the youtube videos I would recommend just sitting down and making a couple models until you have it down, then give her the best one.

Not OP, but it's an interesting question. Japan has a long tradition in paper making and washi is/was widely used for pretty much anything. But most origami paper is de facto made in China. So, do nips use cheap Chinese paper for everyday stuff, or does their national pride forbid it?

(the other way round, chinks have this weird perception that Japanese products are higher quality, and tourists scavenge duty free shops for simple household stuff like knives and toilet seats)

Well, like the person above said, traditional Japanese paper (called Washi, mostly made from Kozo) is produced throughout Japan. As for "western" (sulphite) paper, there does seem to be some internal Japanese production (for example Tant), but I suspect that most of it is imported.

Chink here, off topic but absolutely true. my mother's side of the family has such a hard on for any Japanese product its ridiculous. although the toilet seats are better just for their warming/bidet functions, that are hard to find in mainland China.

I would want the faces to be as clean as they can be within reason.

I don't mind cutting and using glue just want to get the end result so I can paint it.

Any help would be appreciated been trying to do tabs but the final one just will not go in well.

Fist of all you are looking for a (convex) icosahedron

You can use a regular woodglue to clue everything together and a no glue connection for the last flap.

here is a quick edit I did to a regular plan.

The huge issue with this is that i want to do it on a large scale

and secondly some edges would be open while others are seamless and for me its a dealbreaker

How big do you need this? The icosahedron can be built using a compass and ruler at any size you have paper for, but there is going to be gluing no matter what you do.
