This is true. There are standing stones all over the place. The wooden ones have been rotted away. But geophysicists and archaeologists can find traces in the earth. Pic is some 'cup and ring' markings near where I live. Nobody knows what their purpose is. I think they represent a map of some kind. Where to get fresh water, food (berries and wild plants etc) also the rings look like contours on a map.
Who knows? It's a mystery lost in time.
Any theory is just a guess. It's all speculation.

Once humanity invented enough techniques for farming and tool work they were left with far too much free time on their hands. Building religious structures was all there was to do.
